**St. Thomas says etiology is a part of the literal sense. He says something like the following. **

Etiology- when its cause is assigned, as when Our Lord gave the reason why Moses allowed putting away of wives—namely, on account of the hardness of men’s hearts.

Any further examples or ideas?

That is an excellent question, and not as easy as one might think. There are lots of etiological references by Jesus that I think would sort of fall between etiology and allegory because Jesus often gives the reason why something was established because it had a higher purpose, such as when he teaches the true meaning and purpose of the Sabbath, that the Sabbath was given for man, not man for the Sabbath. St. Paul also made some etiological points by explaining why the Law was given, purpose of circumcision, OT sacrifices etc.
