Today my boss and friend mentioned to me that he would like me to be the godmother for his new daughter. I am SO excited and honored, truly. I know the official role of godparents, representing the child at the baptism, guiding the child in the Catholic faith, and raising the child in the Catholic faith if, God forbid, something were to happen to the parents.
My question is about the “etiquette” and responsibilities of the godmother. I know I will get the baby a card and gift. I think I will get her a first Bible with her name engraved and a framed print of the Blessed Virgin and/or a crucifix to hang over her crib. Should I also purchase her baptismal outfit? I worry that the baptismal outfit may be somewhat expensive, and I am somewhat low on money in this time of my life. He is my boss, and he knows that my husband and I don’t make much money.
Anything else I am supposed to do at this point? or anything else I should know? Thank you!
