Eucharist abuses

I went to Mass yesterday, and when it was time to receive the Eucharist, a lady put all her 3 little girls in line w/her and as they walked they had their arms crossed. One was really tiny, about 3 yrs old, another 4-5, and the other was around 6. When they approached the EMHC, the mother asked her to give the girls the Eucharist, and she did. :eek: I was appalled! They were walking back to their pew (one behind mine) and they were playing w/the Eucharist on their hands (even the mom did it). I don’t know if the mother was Catholic or not but this was completely wrong.

I don’t believe a child that small could’ve done her first Communion so I’m pretty sure it was wrong of the EMHC to have done that. I don’t know if I should tell our Pastor about this incident. I had never seen her or her children before, but then that could be because they are new to the Parish or they go to Mass at a different time, or maybe they were visitng. She might have or have not been Catholic. The point here is that those young girls were given the Eucharist. I have 3 3 yr-old cousins, 3 5 yr-old cousins, 2 6 yr-old cousins, 2 8 yr-old cousins and some older ones so I know those girls were really young they were about the size, and acted as my little cousins do…

I can’t believe they weren’t denied the Eucharist. :mad:
 
Yes, absolutely you should tell the pastor about this. If it ever happens again, tell the priest immediately (before the offending or ignorant parties have a chance to leave church with the Eucharist in hand).

IMO there are 2 very different and separate issues here.

Age alone is not a determining factor. My nephew and niece both had their first communion on the day of their (infant) baptisms and so were, even when very young, “eligible” (not sure of the right word) for future communions.
On the other hand, no one of any age should be allowed to not show the proper respect and “walk] back to their pew …playing w/the Eucharist.”
That should be the point addressed.
 
Remember that Eastern Rite Catholics recieve when first Baptized and are allowed to go to communion - indeed it is improper to deny them. Tread lightly if you raise the age issue because you may be off base. I agree with the post above, the issue is playing with the Host.
 
Me four. Babies may validly receive the Eucharist if bapitzed/ confirmed (christmated) and first communed in one of the Eastern Rites- but they better chow down and not play with our Lord that way!
 
Mmmm I guess I learn new things every day, but definitely the playing w/the Host was not ok!
 
Very possible they could be Eastern Rite Catholics, and thus able to validly recieve the Eucharist. Sounds like they need a little instruction in proper reception though.

not only proper reception, this should DEFINATELY be brought to your priest’s attention. NO ONE is ever to leave the altar area without consuming the host and the EMHC is to guard against that possibility. If you ever see this situation again you personally should then and there demand that they consume the Eucharist IMMEDIATELY. why, you might ask… well, it’s rare, but satanic black masses attempt to desicrate the Eucharist during their “sermons” and thus place a high premium on obtaining the consecrated Host. I’m not saying this is the case, but what’s to really stop a satanist from using their children as a means to gain even more Hosts? As catholics we ALL share in the responsibility of ensuring that the Sacred Body and Blood of Jesus are protected from transgressions of all kinds big and small.
 
this is one of the reasons y people started receiving Holy Communion on the tongue, that way people dont walk off with the Holy Eucharist n drop it on the floor or do something sacriligious. tsk tsk tsk

A determined person will be able to remove the Host from his mouth.

Indeed, esp. since in the Eastern Rite, the Eucharist is generally under both forms, and distributed off a spoon into the mouth.
 
This often happens in my mum’s parish in Indonesia. Therefore, now there are wardens standing next to the Eucharistis Ministers and the Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Communion to ensure that the Host is consumed immediately.
