Eucharist - advice please

Hello all,

Today at Mass, I went up to receive the Precious Blood of Jesus, and the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion had only half a sip in the Chalice. I took the cup, sipped, but didn’t sip long enough for the Blood to get into my mouth, and it remained in the Chalice, which I handed back to the EM without thinking properly. The EM took it back to the altar. I’m worried that the Precious Blood was at risk of being profaned in some way because I didn’t drink the small sip.

Should I be worried?

If you are asking whether it was a profanation to lift the cup to your lips without actually getting any of the Precious Blood into your mouth, no, it was not. If you are worried about the risk of the little bit you left behind going “unnoticed” and getting pitched down the sink, worry not. It is practically impossible to drain every last drop from a cup, so there is always a little left behind – for this reason, the Church has procedures for the sacred vessels to be purified in a suitable way.

I was told by a Monsignor who used to teach theology that sacred things are inviolate. In other words, the Precious Blood cannot be “profaned”. It is inviolate.
There are things we can do out of reverence and respect for the sacred Body and Blood if they are dropped or mishandled in any way. And as was said, there are certain procedures for handling the vessels that contain them
But nothing and no one can take away from that which is inherently sacred or “profane” it.

When the cup(s) are returned to the Alter they should all be rinsed with water. The Priest (or deacon) then consumes this water and and precious blood mixture. Assuming this was done, there is no chance for the PB to have been profaned…It was properly consumed.

The transgression, inappropriate action, profane action, or sacrilege is on the part of people involved.

The Body and Blood of Christ remain divine. God’s power is omnipotent.
