What is the name of the “plates with handles” that the altar boys hold under the Eucharist to prevent the Host/crumbs from falling? Is there even a formal name?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I thought it might be the same as what I normallly would call a paten but wasn’t sure.

Them there handles confused me. 🙂

Well there are two types of Patens -

There is the small saucer-shaped dish which covers the mouth of the chalice upon which the large bread for consecration rests as bread until after the offeratory. I don’t know if it is still true but this Paten and the Chalice used to have to be consecrated.

The Paten with the handle, called the communion paten is, at least at the Tridentine Mass I attend, used in place of or with the communion cloth during the distribution of holy communion and does not require consecration.

Thanks again. I am taking over the lead of our altar servers and am going to try to bring some tradition and increased reverence back to that ministry. You have been a help. God Bless.
