Eucharist Dropped-Did I do the right thing?

Today at Mass as I went up to receive Communion and I was receiving on the tongue when the EMHC held up the host and he went to place the host on my tongue and it fell on the ground. I immeaditley reached down and placed it in my mouth. Was I right to do this? Maybe I should receive in the hand so this won’t happen again.

You did fine. The danger is if both you and the EMHC try to reach down at the same time and then we have 100 Hosts on the floor along with both of you. Receiving on the tongue is just fine. New EMHC’s need a little more experience with this sometimes.
 
actually, I believe that you are to not do this (I understand the urge and am not criticizing) and the EMHC is the one to handle this.

They (EMHC) probably don’t know what to do! I have seen a priest pick up a host and consume it. What was done was probably the best solution, unless there is an actual regulation for this situation.

It would be a parish instruction. An individual parish might instruct the members not to and let the person distributing Holy Communion pick the dropped Host up. I have never seen this done except once in RCIA when the question was asked.

I will be sure to confirm with my priest what he would like me to do if this should ever happen again. The EMHC had already moved to put the host in my mouth and my brain just jumped and I immeaditley went to the floor to pick up the host. Thanks for responding guys?
 
We prefer that the communicant pick up the host. There is a danger that if the minister may spill the ciborium if he bends to pick it up.
 
At our Parish, (and others in the area), the Servers stand next to the Priest/Deacon/EMHC with a paten with a long handle. They hold the paten below the chin or hands in order to catch any Host that may fall. Perhaps you could speak to the Priest about using these?
 
Along the line of prevention, I offer the following information. We have a new deacon, and he and I have had a couple of near uff-das with losing a host (I receive on the tongue). For the past few weeks I have been liberally wetting the top of my tongue as I go up in the line. I know, it sounds kinda gross, but the host sticks a lot better.
 
Receiving on tongue seems to be a huge problem to many Priest/Deacon/EMHC.

I remember back in Vietnam, those priests over there were super experienced in placing the Eucharist right on your tongue with no problem. 🙂
 
One of my past priests explained to the parish that should the Eucharist ever fall on the ground, the fallen host should be given to the priest so that it can be properly taken care of.

You did OK dont worry. The Lord is bigger than that.
Either on the tongue or on the hand with reverence is beautiful.
The fretting is the problem and not the Eucharist falling. This was not intentional.

That is only if someone is not willing to consume it which is the proper way to take care of a host. Since our OP did consume the host, problem solved.There is a procedure involving dissolving for when a host is in a state where consuming it is not an option .

There is nothing wrong with consuming a host from the floor if you want. I have picked up Hosts and pieces of Hosts dropped by people and simply consumed them.
 
My wife found an partially consumed host in the pew one Sunday. She gave it to the visiting priest and he immediately consumed it. :eek:

LOL…since I have been receiving on the tongues at the TLM*** I do the same thing. ***The other day it stuck on the tip of my tongue and the poor server hit me in the chin with the paten as he was afraid the Host was going to drop off my tongue.

He self communicated which you are not supposed to do, However given the circumstance i may have doe the same thing.

Yes . We use a Paten at my Church & that would most certainly solve the problem.🙂
