My friend was taking Communion to the sick. She has decided that due to her very busy life she can no longer do so at this time. She brought her last consecrated Host yesterday for my mother. My mom received a small bit and then my friend asked me if she could burry the rest of the Host in my yard. We did not consume the Host ourselves becuase we both are in need of confession. Is this OK to do? I know you burry sacramentals, so yesterday it seemed like the right thing to do, but the more I think about it,I’m not so sure. HELP!

What I would do is take it to a priest (carry it in a pyx), explain what happened, and let him deal with it.

I don’t have a pyx. If it’s not right to burry the Host, I want to tell my friend so she will never do it again. If it is acceptable, then I would leave it alone.

Is there no way for you to get a pyx (like borrow one from the Church)?

Maybe just tell the priest what happened, and ask him what to do next. I would not want to just leave it.

Thank you for trying to help me. First let me say that I have never needed a pyx so I have never given any thought as to how to obtain one. I suppose I could get one from church, thanks for suggesting that.
I found something on Google from EWTN about a soiled Host. It said to disolve the host in water and return it to the earth.

NO!
Retreve the Host. Place it in a cloth or even paper napkin. (The paper can be burned later, the cloth can be washed) Take it back to the parish and give it to the priest and explain what happened.

I’ve spoken to a priest, as jmcrae suggested, and everything is taken care of. Thanks to you both for your replies.

What did he say and what exactly did he have you do?

Oh dear. It makes me wonder if this incident can happen more than once… It’s sad… I just wonder how Jesus felt being treated like dirt… :dts:

He told me to leave it where it was and to relax. I asked about digging it up and dissolving it in water and he said that what was done is done and to dig it up now would be worse than leaving it alone and most likely I wouldn‘t be able to get all the particles anyway… I asked if I should tell my friend never to do that again and he said there was no point in embarrassing her, her intent was good. Had I brought it to him or if for some reason a priest had to dispose of a Sacred Host, he would rinse it down the sacrarium with water. The sacrarium is a sink with a pipe leading directly into the ground, not the sewer system. Since the Host is already in the ground, he said it was best to leave it. I think he should know. He is a Benedictine Monk at a local abbey.

You know, my friend had the best intentions and unless you know for certain that burrying the Host is treating Jesus like dirt, I think you should refrain from such judgmental comments. The priest I spoke with was so kind and understanding and made a point of saying that although the host should have been consumed or taken back to the church, my friend, who reverently burried the Host, had the right intentions in her heart.

It was unintentional so I think Jesus would understand. I have a question did the person who buried the Host is aware that the Host is Jesus Christ?

Or go to Confession, and consume it.

Of course.( Are you asking seriously?) She is trained to take communion to the sick and has a deep and profound love for Jesus, more than anyone I’ve ever met . That’s why when she suggested burying it, I didn’t question it. It was only later when I got to thinking about it, that I had doubts. I’m glad I asked and I’m glad I called the Monk.

Since she had know she shouldn’t have burried it. Either you or her should have consumed it if this incident should happen again.

Other than that, it is best that she go to confession since she committed a sacrilege by burrying the Host. It’s also common sense not to bury the Host why would someone suggest to burry the Host in the yard? No one should have suggested it in the first place.

I missed one part of the post. You said you could not received the Host because you needed confession. The other suggestion would be to covered it in napkin and return it to the priest.

Burrying the Host is a BIG no. no.

I explained why she or I didn’t consume the Host in my first post. The priest I spoke with said no sacrilege was committed. Are you a priest?

Maybe the Monk was just being kind to me…but I think he would let me know if I had committed a sin. I made a point of asking. Hummmm:(

I am confused. Your friend must have had a pyx to bring the Host to your mother. Since this was her last Host, she could have just put the remainder in the same pyx she brought it in and returned it to the priest.
