I am a lay Catholic and considering the circumstances since it was not intentional, it would not be mortal sin, but burrying the Host with the full consent of the will (grave matter, full consent, and full acknowledgement), yes it would be sacrilege.I explained why she or I didn’t consume the Host in my first post. The priest I spoke with said no sacrilege was committed. Are you a priest?

Since this was her last Host, she could have just put the remainder in the same pyx she brought it in and returned it to the priest.
He is absolutely incorrect to have told you to leave the Host where it was. Doing so risks, that an animal might dig it up and carry it off. You should retrieve the host and make sure that it is protected and return Him to a Catholic Church.He told me to leave it where it was and to relax. Had I brought it to him or if for some reason a priest had to dispose of a Sacred Host, he would rinse it down the sacrarium with water. The sacrarium is a sink with a pipe leading directly into the ground, not the sewer system. Since the Host is already in the ground, he said it was best to leave it. I think he should know. He is a Benedictine Monk at a local abbey.

He is partially correct that he may dissolve the Host in water (which takes a bit of time) and after it has totally dissolved may pour the water down the sacaraium.
As I said he is wrong. If I could I would be willing to come over myself and take care of this situation for you. But I don’t suppose you ilive near by. Thank you! I can now sleep better tonight.I explained the situation to my parish priest tonight after Mass and he asked me to return the Host to him in a hankerchief. I went straight home and unearthed it and took it to him. I am relieved.
If I understand correctly, as long as the Eucharistic host retains its appearances as bread, Jesus is still present in the Eucharist regardless of where He is. I myself could not sleep knowing that Jesus was buried in the soil, regardless of the intent of the one doing the burying. I would say that obtaining a Pyx is the first care of an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, next is two small candlesticks and candles.Thank you for trying to help me. First let me say that I have never needed a pyx so I have never given any thought as to how to obtain one.
