Eucharist, mortal sin, family

My brother and father want to go to Church!

They haven’t attended a Church service in so long and I believe that means they are in mortal sin. I told them that they need to abstain from communion because they are in mortal sin but they are going to recieve it anyway (sacrilege). Also there is no confession on Sundays (today) What do I do!?

Hog tie them and drag them to confession. Well not really.

I’d say discuss the situation with your parish priest.
 
They don’t have confession on Sundays. I wish they did. Also I don’t know which priest is doing the mass so I won’t be able to reach him until it’s too late

Ok. I told them not to receive the Eucharist and they won’t 😌. I hope they understand that mortal sin means you have to abstain from the blessed Eucharist
 
You do realize if someone is ignorant of “what mortal sin is” that they cannot be guilty of mortal sin, right?

I’d assume that they are intelligent people, let them know that Communion may be received by Catholics who are properly disposed. Properly disposed means that they have observed the fast, unless they are excused from the fast for health reasons, and that they are not aware of any grave sins that have been committed since their last confession.

My brother is aware of mortal sin. He even told me some of his sins and I told him he should confess them. He didn’t and became an atheist apparently. My dad swares a lot and I assumed he was in mortal sin because he makes fun of Catholicsm and doesn’t go to church. I told them to abstain from communion because I didn’t want them to commit another mortal sin. Also isn’t missing Sunday Mass a mortal sin?

Bring them to church, advise them that they shouldn’t go to Communion, and if they troop up there anyway pray for them. Ask God’s mercy on them. They are wanting to go to church and be close to God so it’s not like they’re going with the bad intent of creating a big sacrilege.

Then try to make sure they both get to confession at the earliest opportunity and remind them that they should mention about having missed church for so long. And pray for them some more. That’s all you can do.

Honestly i would let your dad work out that issue himself as he already knows…but i would continue to try to guide your brother if hes under 18.

Be supportive in their efforts to be in Mass and try to incorporate devotions/prayer at home. This is a great sign they want to go! Have faith they will get to confession soon.
