I don’t know the proper name of this part of the celebration, but in the whole period between the prayers of the faithful and the distribution of communion, is there supposed to be a part of the prayer that prays for the pope, the local bishop and the clergy? I thought there was and I expected it to be there, but this weekend it wasn’t.

It may have been missing in the past, but I was listening for it this weekend to see how the priest modified the prayer to handle the fact that we had no pope that day. But he seemed to skip that part and go straight to whatever was next.

Is that OK, or does that need to be in there? Are there ‘varieties’ of the whole ritual that include and exclude various parts?

there is a specific paragraph for the Eucharistic prayer to be used during the period of mourning, a link was posted here yesterday on the diocese of cincinnati website that gives it, as well as morning and evening prayer, liturgy of the word and other liturgical language and usage for this period of time.

It would be omitted when there is no pope. For instance, here in Columbus instead of “for John Paul our pope, Frederick our bishop…” we now get " for Frederick our bishop…"

Some priests (actually maybe even most priests) probably didn’t think about what to say until they came to that part of the Mass. I’ve seen several hold back the tears when they get there, especially if it was their first Mass since the Holy Father’s death.

I’m sure there was alot of confusion around the world but this will change when a new pope is selected.

I can’t remember exactly off the top of my head but I seem to recall hearing that Eucharistic Prayers II and III have a special commemoration for a recently deceased pope.

The pope is still mentioned in the Eucharistic prayer, just not his name. Instead of saying “…we offer them for John Paul our pope…” the priest says “…we offer them for our pope…”

The portion of the Eucharistic Prayer where this takes place is called the “commemorations” and if the See is vacant then the holder of that See is not commemorated. Thus, when the pope has died there is no commemoration for the pope (not even “for our pope” with no name since there is, in fact, no pope).

If we are talking about the episcopal See, then if the bishop has died he is not mentioned.

This also applies to the Eastern Catholic Churhes which would normally commemorate “John Paul, Pope of Rome” – that is omitted and will not be resumed until there is a new pope.

Well that is interesting because in our Mass this week our priest completely omitted any mention of the bishops and clergy too. I don’t know if he’s done it before - can’t remember - but I’ll keep an ‘ear’ on it from now on. If he’s leaving it out, is that allowed or is this some kind of abuse?

This is what our priest did as well (Archdiocese of Detroit). He left a pause where normally he would have prayed “for John Paul our Pope” and continued with “Adam our Archbishop…”, and he was obviously fighting back tears (as were most of us). 😦

Our mass was just hours after the pope had died, our priest said “for John Paul our deceased Pope” I wonder what he’ll do next week.

at my church, Father at that point in the Canon, says, “we offer them for the next successor of St Peter”

What some people will hear at Mass is a commemoration for the deceased pope which would be used at any Mass for the dead, such as a funeral. This is mentioned in a different spot if the prayer, however.

Other than dropping mention of the pope, no other replacement text ought to be offerred in it’s place.
