Eucharist only twice in one day, why?

To stop a trend of rushing from one church to another in time to arrive for the Consecration and Holy Communion, and not actually attending the whole Mass.

I’ve never heard of that…It’s hard enough for the Church to get people to go to even one weekly Mass…let alone worrying about people going to multiple Masses in one day!

It wouldn’t be a large number but there would be those who thought that if Communion once a day was great, Communion many times a day would be better. They wouldn’t necessarily attend Mass, they would just run from one church to another arriving just in time for Communion. As I recall it was precisely because that WAS happening that the rule was put in place.

Most of the rules that we can’t understand were put in place for a reason. The obligation to receive once a year was put in place because people just weren’t receiving. There was a period when people were more interested in seeing the consecrated Host than in receiving it.

Let’s not forget those rare instances when going to two Masses per day might be done out of convenience when a Sunday Mass and Holy Day of Obligation fall very close to each other.

A perfect example of this was in December of 2006. December 24th was a Sunday in Advent, and Christmas Day (a Holy Day of Obligation) was on Monday.

I personally attended a Mass Sunday morning for my Sunday obligation and a Christmas Day vigil Mass that night for my Christmas Day obligation. I therefore received twice in one day.

I personally think Cannon law strikes a nice balance in allowing when situations such as these (or wedding, funeral, etc) comes up but preventing such frequent communion as to perhaps cause some to think of it as “just another thing” to do at Mass. Of course, it’s really not my opinion but the Pope’s that matters anyway.

Canon Law allows for someone like me to receive Communion at my dad’s hospital bedside and still go to Mass and receive. I just can’t do it in the reverse order.

But liturgically, that is considered 2 separate days.
Maybe someone familiar with the Liturgy of the Hours can show us how that devotion models this situation?

Liturgically, yes, but canonically it is a single day. In the example given by AHapka, he could not have received twice Sunday morning and then received again at the vigil mass Sunday night. He could, however, have received twice at anticipated masses Saturday evening, and twice again Sunday morning.

i was just confirmed on tuesday. wednesday was i received Holy Communion during the mass for our lady of mt. carmel and then i went to an evening mass before benediction and adoration and received Holy Communion a second time. after being deprived of receiving Holy Communion for 6-8 weeks, it was so nice to be able to attend the masses and finally be able to participate in the whole mass. that is the only time i have done it twice in one day, but i am only fully Catholic since tuesday - LOL
