Dear Friend,
I am a Catholic priest who offers the Holy Mass daily. I do believe in the REAL PRESENCE of Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist. I believe not becaus I understand what Jesus said, but because it is Jesus who said so. It will be helpful to refer to the Gospel of St John Chapter 6, verses 26 to 36 and then again fron chapter 6, verses 47 to 69 :
Many of us are in the situation describes in verse 60, yet Jesus did not retract His statement repeated throughout in Chapter 6.
Many Protestants would like to believe that in verse 63 Jesus meant that He was talking about spirit. In fact, Jesus did not say “My flesh is spirit” but Verse 63 “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and they are truth”
If the disciples who were present and disagreed wit Jesus had understood Jesus’ words to mean spirit, then there was no problem, and they would not have left jesus. But the fact of the matter is that they understood Jesus literally when He spoke of eating His Body and drinking His Blood - Not in an act of canabilism, but in the form of Bread and Wine. Jesus gives us the choice in verse 67 to leave Him - Our consent must be freely given.
Now let us see the positon after Jesus’ Resurrection whrn the apostles began offering the Holy Eucharist in the homes
What was their belief in the real presence. Let os see the testimony of St Paul in 1Cor11:23 and following verses.
23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread,
24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord.
28 Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29 For all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves
Yes, the Eucharist is not a piece of secular bread but the Body and Blood of Jesus.
We Catholics are blessed because we have not seen but yet we believe. Ours is the faith of St Peter
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”
The apostles through the pray to the Holy Spirit could have the bread and wine thansformed into the Body and Blood of Jesus,So too the ordained Catholic priest through the prayer to the Holy Spirit{Calles epicleses} cause God to perform the same act as the apostles.
With Love Blessings and Prayers.

While I believe and subscribe to all that you said I have a little difficulty with the word “cause”. It is not like we can have the power over God.

Because God wills it to be so.

Because God (in the Second Person, Jesus Christ) is now body, blood, soul and divinity, and we are body, blood and soul. So a spiritual unification of any kind does not join the completeness of God with the completeness of a human being. But in the Eucharist the completeness of God is joined with the completeness of the human being.

The Eucharist is an element of the Incarnation.

Because he is quite serious that he has now joined himself with his creation in a perfect and forever way.

How could he hear all our prayers? How could he rise from the dead? How could he create the entire universe? He’s God.
Will we partake of the body of Christ in the same manner in heaven as we do here on earth?

Will we eat his flesh?

Actually… It’s not that priests have power OVER God. But YES…God GAVE ordained priests the power to call Him down out of heaven and become the bread and wine.

Is that not amazing?! Talk about a humble and selfless God we have!
