How do I get started?
Books to read? Suggestions?
I was looking in my parish bulletin and they have a time listed when I am at work. I am on contract so I can’t just take time off. Can I do it at some other time? (I’ll also check schedules of other local parishes.)
What do I need?
Are there special prayers?
Do you just sit there and be quiet?
What do you do?

Hi “GodIsGracious” 👋 I would suggest either calling, or going to your parish office and inquiring. Maybe they would be willing to set up more time, for Eucharistic Adoration in your parish… based on such inquiries. You might be the “inquiry” that helps them decide to extend Adoration! 😉

We attend daily Mass 3 times a week, and Adoration 1 time a week (Wed.) for about 30 minutes, prior to Mass. The people there all do different things. Some of them sit quietly, with their eyes closed. Some use prayer books. Some pray the Rosary. I like to say an extra Chaplet of Divine Mercy in the Presence of Jesus. Or sometimes, I just sit quietly and bask in His Glorious Presence.

You can certainly talk with Jesus. It’s a great time to have a casual “one on one” with Our Lord, tell Him about your day, etc. (internally… of course! 😃 ).

I don’t know if this helps. But I hope so.

God bless you!

Hi, 🙂 there are no set ‘rules’ for Adoration, except staying quiet and genuflecting (on both knees) when you come in 😉 you can do anything you want; pray, think, read, etc…

what I usually do is just talk to Jesus in my own words, or use the Sacred Heart prayers…

and I really love this little book:

God bless

I usually go on Sunday mornings after chores and I start by doing morning prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours.

Then I do a rosary and then I do some spiritual reading. I just finished the book I was on so I’ll probably start Interior Castle by St. Teresa of Avila. Or Way of Perfection. I haven’t decided yet:).

I try to get there early enough so that I have an hour before they start the Divine Mercy chaplet in song. I love doing that before the Blessed Sacrament!

Often I’ll just read some Scripture or just adore Christ and love Him.

I also like doing Sacred Heart prayers. Especially the Litany of the Sacred Heart.❤️

See if you can find a parish where they have perpetual adoration. More and more parishes have the Eucharist exposed 24/7. In a city as big as Dallas, I’d be willing to bet they have it someplace. I live in a small city (Boise, Idaho), and even we have a parish with perpetual adoration. (In fact, there are three parishes here within about a 20-mile radius with perpetual adoration.)

God is gracious,
All these suggestions are excellent. I would only add one caution; don’t bring so much stuff that you spend the whole time motormouthing to Jesus. I was advised a while ago to make SURE I spent at least a third of my time just sitting quietly before our Lord. It can be sometimes nerve wracking or for some a difficult thing. Sitting quietly is sometimes very hard for me. I tend to blabber too much. Lately though, I must say I’ve had some very weighty issues to bring to Him and being quiet isn’t so hard. I like saying one of the hours from the liturgy of the hours. Divine mercy chaplet is good too. I hope you have a good visit with Our Lord, youcan hardly go wrong. Oh the Divine Praises seems to me to be a most appropriate prayer as well.
Peace, Tom

Hey there everybody! :wave:Thank you for your replies and ideas. 🙂 I didn’t think that so much, yet so little, is done. I take it then that it is as simple as sitting quietly and peacefully with our Lord, right?

I’ll be honest here. The other night when I was saying my prayers I asked Jesus why he couldn’t be here HERE on EARTH like he was when he was here with the Apostles. I told him that I so desperately wanted to be with him and to just sit with him.

And then…:newidea: Bing!

The two words came into my head, “Eucharistic Adoration.”

He IS here on EARTH with us. Talk about having your prayers answered, eh? 😃

Victorious, you’d be surprised at what Dallas doesn’t have, even though it is a big metropolitan area combined with Forth Worth! But thank you for the suggestion of looking for Perpetual Adoration. The Dallas Archidiocese DOES have all of the Catholic churches listed and their websites. Their websites do seem to be fairly update. And I don’t doubt I’ll find Perpetual Adoration.

Oh and Tom? Sitting quietly is no problem for me. hehe… I’m an only child with a strict mother. So I know how to simply sit still. That’s how I recharge too.

My dear friend

I have my routine basically as follows. I have my own key to the church and go late at night for a long visit. You set your own rules though.
Be aware God is in the tabernacle. Genuflect and cross yourself as you should. I kneel and bow before the tabernacle praying the prayer St Michael taught the children at Fatima. I have this version- Mot Holy Trinity I adore, Most Hioly Trinity I adore you. Most Hioly Trinity I adore you. My God, My God I love you in the most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.
I offer my prayer to honour and thank God the Father 1/3, 1/3 for God the Son and same for the Holy Spirit. I offer simultaneously 1/3 for our Blessed Mother under each of Her titles - Daughter of God the Father, Mother of God the Son and Spouse of God the Holy Spirit.
I usually make a 3 hr visit and place myself at the foot of the cross as our Lord dies in agony for 3 hrs. All is present with God so I just try to be there for Him and offer support and consolation as best I can. You can make a shorter visit no probs.
I then greet the guardian Angel of the parish and all the Holy Angels around the tabernacle and ask them to pray for all my intentions, especially the priests and parishioners. I make a spiritual communion.
I light a candle by our Blessed Mothers altar and place my prayers in Her hands to dispense amongst my intentions or how She sees fit.

I go to my seat and kneel and pray- my Lord and my God, I firmly believe that you are here and you see me. I adore you with profound reverence, I ask your pardon for my sins and the grace to make these moments of prayer fruitful. My Immaculate, Mother, St Joseph my father and lord, my Guardian Angel intercede for me.
I redo the Fatima prayer and spiritual communion.

I pray for about 1 hr. I pray the rosary, or way of the cross, or divine mercy chaplet, or listen to hymns and offer that, same with gregorian, or occasionally I pray in silence. The important thing is to really love God as much as you can.

At the end of the session I kneel and pray- My God, I thank you for the good resolutions, inspirations and affections you have communicated to me during this time of prayer and I ask your help in putting them into effect. My Immaculate, Mother, St Joseph my father and lord, my Guardian Angel intercede for me.
I redo the Fatima prayer and spiritual communion.
I have a break and coffee etc each hour. I keep praying on my break outside though.

When I come back I go to my seat and start and finish my prayer as the first time. But I only kneel and bow before the tabernacle and repeat the prayers as when I first entered before I leave after the last session.

I keep a lit candle on our Blessed Mothers Altar if it runs out.

I do 3 lots of 1 hr sessions like this. But you can do 3 lots of 10 mins if you want or whatever and divide it into 1/3 's.

Before I go out the door at the end I spend a few moments saying goodbye to God etc. I think it’s important to give God a big smile often and express love and affection to Him often in your visit too.

I hope you get some pointers from how I do it that are useful.

It’s a great devotion. And one that brings much grace your way.

May God bless you:thumbsup:🙂

John, Thank you for your routine. It does give me ideas!

While I have not yet found Perpetual Adoration, I have found several parishes very close to me who have hours that will allow me to go for atleast an hour or two. I was hoping to find something today as I am getting anxious. I have found something for Tuesday that I could go to as well.

The extent of my experience is with a perpetual adoration chapel nearby.

Sometimes I can just stop in for a quick prayer (maybe while I’m waiting for the near=-by pharmacy to fill my prescription), and other times an hour or so can fly by.

I always start off kneeling, and I’ve noticed that most people do the same. After a while I will sit. A lot of people seem to bring spiritual material to read. Sometimes I will pray the Liturgy of the Hours. Sometimes I will do an examination of conscience. Sometimes I will just sit. Sometimes I will write in my journal. Sometimes I will read a short devotion or the readings for the next day. Sometimes… all of the above.

I love it. It is so quiet, and while there are always other people there, you barely notice them. A great gift! Enjoy.

wow this gives me a lot of ideas too 😃

I’m going to Adoration next Friday and really looking forward to it, I miss it.

Just ask our Lord to help you visit Him. It’ll work.

May God bless you:thumbsup:🙂

I had this same thought a while ago!!! 🙂
He calls us, more often than we realize, to just sit and bi with him. And yet, with all the hustle and bustle of life we can sometimes miss his soft voice. He won’t yell for us to come visit. 🙂

Good idea! Sometimes I don’t think about asking for even the littlest of things, like, help to come visit him.

What has always helped me, especially in my early days of Eucharistic Adoration, was any sort of prayer book, a book of “reflections,” to help me think on things, as well as the Stations of the Cross.

Hi There,

For me, I just waltz in whenever I can, and let Jesus touch me! And, He does most powerfully during these times. I’m a season in my spiritual life right now where Eucharistic Adoration equips me and fills me with His presence more than anything else currently does.

Definitely no “set rules” as far as I know. Just be really reverent, and you’ll be good.

I also want to echo this link:
savior.org/devotions.htm
this works, too! I’ve done this at home many times on line as well.

Also, check out this link for possible EA opportunities in your area:
therealpresence.org/chap_fr.htm

I would also go to a church’s individual website to confirm those times as a few in my area have changed.

This is an awesome experience I hadn’t discovered until '98 although I was Catholic my whole life (since '63). There’s nothing like the Presence of Jesus! 👍

Hope this helps,

sp

I take my Bible and read the Bible, pray the Rosary or Franciscan Crown Rosary and also take my Liturgy of the Hours with me and pray the Liturgy of the Hours.

and, more specifically, what I actually do when I “waltz in” and “let Jesus touch me” is, I also genuflect on both knees and cross myself, kneel for a time asking forgiveness for all my sins and contact Jesus. I don’t kneel long and then sit, then do a variety of things… adore Him by concentrating on the host before me, reading scripture, reading/saying written prayers and much writing in my journal lately. Most of all, I pour out my heart to the Lord, and He straightens me out, my outlook, during EA. It’s the ultimate attitude adjustment!

Blessings,

sp

i just go and do/ say nothing…

although i feel its besst to do total silence thing at the Exposed Sacrament…

well, no, i shouldn’t say that… it’s just different when unExposed… not different BAD…

it’s very mysterious… (or only to me???)

i heard the souls in Purgatory gather around the Tabernacle in the Church…and so they are There with us when we are There.

i belive this - although i would have to ask the bishop about it… but i believe 99.9 % this is true… because sometimes … i get some uncomfortable… feelings while There at the Unexposed Sacrament… 🤷

words are inadquate…
