Gracious, there was never an ‘offense’ involved. And I trust no offense was taken by you.

On my part it was simply a wish to give correct information. I know that at times I have been guilty of making errors in pronunciation, for example, and I would much rather know the ‘correct’ pronunciation rather than have people ignore my gaffe. Because if they never tell me, I’ll never know I’m saying it incorrectly --and keep ON saying it incorrectly. And I find most people would rather have correct information if at all possible. God bless. May He give you the guidance you seek.

I agree some people go too far in insisting on accurate terminology regarding this especially when the other person can be presumed to be simply ignorant of the issue and using terms common in their own parish, but at the same time I think those who label this a pointless word-fight aren’t thinking with the mind of the Church, if only again out of ignorance.

This terminological controversy is a big enough issue that the Vatican has gotten involved.

People cannot really be blamed for using the terminology under which this ministry was established. The first document on this called them special ministers of the Eucharist as you will see if you check EWTN’s library for “Immensae Caritatis”. Other sites have updated this document to reflect the demands of Redemptionis Sacramentum but EWTN retains the original English text. Bad translation from the Latin? Most likely, but still used today.

How many people have actually read Redemptionis Sacramentum? I know priests who’ve never read it.

Hi, I have recently been asked to be a Eucharistic minister at my church. The pastor knows me well and said he was happy to have me. My problem is that I do not feel that I can perform this function while in a state of sin.
And are we not always in a state of sin? Yes I may go to confession and be absolved, but what if between then and the time I am called on to perform this duty I have an impure thought? Any ideas? I do not want to desecrate the Eucharist by my unworthy presence.

There are people isee on the altar thaT SHOULD NOT BE THERE. Who am I to judge?
I just wonder,k I confess weekily and there are about 2 other poeople; hoqwever,l none of them are minisrters of tghe mass. Isn’t this kind of quaint.

then ask yourself: are you needed to serve in your parish in the terms defined in that document?
In many parishes the answer is probably a resounding NO!

If you are not needed you should respectfully decline the invitation, and state your reasons.

If you are needed (i.e there are very few priests, and only 1 or 2 Extraordinary ministers are used to distribute Holy Communion to a large congregation, or Extraordinary Ministers are used to distribute the Precious Blood while the Priest distributes the Precious Body) then you should accept the offer, and use your mentioned scruples about a state of sin to act as a strong call to repentance and regular confession which will be a great push towards personal holiness.

Consider the possibility that your parish may need a Deacon. Could it be you?

deacons are not, they can not consecrate the eucharist
