Eucharistic Miracles!

how nice, I witness a Eucharistic miracle every day at Mass, and what is more I participate in that miracle. There is only one Miracle once for all time, and we participate in it at Mass, not on a website.

So, the authenticated Eucharistic miracles are not important and should not be enjoyed just as much as the “ordinary” (for lack of a better word) miracle that occurs on Catholic altars every day? I don’t mean to reduce the significance of the miracle of the Eucharist as it takes place in parishes around the world, but it is certainly an extra special gift from God when He causes consecrated hosts to bleed or to even display, outwardly, the inner substantial reality of His own flesh!

there is no competition here, there are no Eucharistic miracles that do not have their source in the holy Eucharist confected in the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. God gives his grace and gifts when and where he wills but always on earth through the Eucharistic celebration of the Paschal Mystery.
 
less, contentiously, i would like to thank ‘exporter’ for posting this site. i find the subject of extraordinary eucharistic miracles fascinating. i’ve read most of joan carrol cruz’s book on the subject, and think that if most protestants i know looked into the subject, they would reconsider the catholic position.

my fav, i think, is luciano. but i love hearing about all of them.

i’d also like to point out that i’m very grateful that there is NOT, in fact, only one miracle. God’s grace, and mercy, are new every morning, and we see its manifestations in the glories of the world around us.

I too have read Cruz’s book, and would have enjoyed it much more had she discriminated between the Eucharistic miracles (like Lanciano) which - as far as I can judge - seem authentic, and those which were mediaeval legends, sometimes of a heavily anti-Semitic nature. Being Jewish myself by birth, these didn’t go down well: the blood libel and the accusations of Eucharistic blasphemy were two of the nastier manifestations of mediaeval piety.

I am really too tired to be contentious right now. Children’s church at 9, RCIA set-up, class from 10-11:30, confirmation candidates presented at Noon Mass, living rosary by youth group after Mass, planet pizza with youth group after that. this was our kick-off for the Eucharistic year, rest of parish celebration begins next Sunday with potluck, and adoration Sunday and Monday until the 7pm holy day Mass. We have been pushing for years for holy hours, which we finally got this year once a month, and having the chapel open evenings, now we hope this will lead to parish renewal through increase in reverence for the Eucharist. Please pray for us, so Dave, we are on the right side of this.

I have no doubt that Eucharistic miracles occur, they are amply attested, in fact I have a great video in English and Spanish which I will use in one of the adult ed sessions I will be holding during the Eucharistic year.

But I worry about the tendency to be on the lookout for miracles and mystical experiences as if they are necessary to prove the reality of the Real Presence.

I do enjoy Joan Cruz’ books, expecially for the great images she manages to gather together, but my academic background gets in the way because she is so eclectic and her research is so undiscriminating. She sometimes repeats errors from other sources without validating or checking. I would not use them as definitive truth, but only as anecdotal evidence.

I have experienced a Eucharistic Miracle, first hand, so I know they still happen and are for building up the faith.

I posted this some time ago in another thread but am posting it again, here.

About 18 years ago, I was a Eucharistic Minister in a Southern California parish. One particular Sunday, I was to serve the Precious Blood.
Father was known for being a bit stingy with the amount of wine he Consecrated. He often came up short.
This particular Sundday, we had some Baptisms and had large groups of family members show up, more than expected.
Then, without anyone knowing or remembering the Knights all showed up with their families. It looked like an Easter or Christmas Mass, the Church had folks standing out on the steps outside. It was a mob scene.
At any rate, Father consecrated just a little extra wine because of the Baptism, not really enough for that.
I ended up serving out of the large pewter chalice and we had 3 other Eucharistic ministers serving the preceous blood out of 3 smaller ones.
We had been distributing Communion for a while when the other three Eucharistic Ministers started running out. Each one walked over behind me and looked down into the largest chalice. I was below half when the first one ran out. Father and the Deacon had also glanced over to check. By the time the third Minister ran out, I had about half inch of Precious Blood left and looked up to see the line still clear out the doors of the church. I looked at Our Lord and said, “Jesus, there is not enough of your precious Blood to serve everybody”. At that, my cup was instantly full to the brim! It was strange because the outside of the pewter fogged up to the line where it was full. I gasped and when I did, Father and the Deacon looked to see why, by now I was weeping. Father just smiled.

I continued to serve everyone in line, as they saw the full chalice it was becoming obvious what had happened. When everyone in the Church had been served, the chalice was still completely full and had to be consumed by all of the ministers, the Deacon and Father. He was a very traditional Portuguese Priest but was not in the least way surprised. He told us that miracles of the Eucharist should be expected as Jesus is certainly a Miracle Worker.

If any one in that Church had questioned the Real Presence before, I am sure they did not after this. My devotion to the Holy Eucharist is a great thing in my life.

i am amazed and joyful at the miracle you’ve shared with us. it sounds like something Jesus would do. 🙂

but i do have to ask, and this is to everyone - should we EXPECT miracles? doesn’t that seem presumptuous?

By “expecting” miracles, I think the idea is that we should not be surprised in the least when they occur. Our attitude should be the same as a saint (I can’t remember which one) who was sitting in his room when a fellow monk came to his door. He told the saint to come quickly, that the face of our Lord Jesus had appeard in the center of a consecrated host! The saint made no move, but simply smiled and replied, “seeing that would not make me anymore certain of my Lord’s presence than I already am”.

I experienced a eucharistic miracle of my own almost 2 months ago. I was attending Mass the day I moved out of my parent’s house into my own apartment. When I received the Blood, it of course looked like wine. But the moment it touched my lips, I tasted blood. Nothing I’ve ever done could have made me deserve such a gift, but I think it was a sign from God that he would be with me as I went out on my own.

I was so excited to see this posting and read about what others have experienced! I would like to tell my story!
A few years ago , I was trying to help my non- catholic friend ,in her search for a cancer cure.We were both led to Divine Mercy Sunday. A Catholic for 54years, I never heard of the Divine Mercy Devotion before but we went since a healing service was scheduled after this mass. My friend did not receive a physical cure but mentally she felt her anxiety lessened , shortly after this she passed away. I was also very moved by this service.
The following year I went to the devotion again in her memory and also as part of the devotion I went to confession,the first time in many ,many years. Receiving this sacrament, plus being part of this moving devotion and tears for my friend and feeling such great relief, all came together and it seemed that God was very pleased. When I went up to receive Communion , as the Priest lifted the Blessed Host to give it to the person standing next to me, I could see the rays in the Host , the same rays seen in the Divine Mercy Picture that flow from Christ’s Heart. This vision only lasted for a few seconds but what a wonderful gift. It is something that will be with me for the rest of my life! My life was forever changed !

Dr C - the saint you mentioned is St Louis.

I have never witnessed an extraordinary miracle of the Eucharist - you guys are very lucky to have been so blessed.
