Does anyone know why it is “All glory and honor is yours” as opposed to “are yours”? It just stands out when I hear it, but I know there must be a solid reason for the singular verb form. Any thoughts? I asked our RCIA instructor and priest, but neither could answer.

Hi,

I think it is more a grammar question–Glory & honor is the subject, and considered as one.

Like Black & white is the color of my new dress.

You wouldn’t say My new dress are black & white.

Glory and honor are attributes of praise.

Is refers to ALL. “All is yours.” Glory and honor describes all. “All glory and honor is yours.”

Not to nit pic this, but technically the sentence Black and white are the colors of my new dress would be the correct way to state it. In the second sentence, My new dress is black and white is correct because dress is the subject and black and white are adjectives describing the dress. Jpjd is correct in that All is in verb agreement with is.

Fowler’s Modern English Usage wasn’t clear. Here’s Chambers Guide to Grammar and Usage:

“When two or more singular nouns or noun phrases linked by and refer to one and the same individual or object, the related verb, pronouns, etc, should be in the singular”

Since both glory and honour refer to one almighty father, the word **is **is the right one to use.

Now, it’s only a shame that my own grammar doesn’t match up to that of the books.

While you are correct, you did change the sentence. Asteroid’s explanation is what I was trying to say.

However, “all” is the subject in this sentence (not “glory and honor”), and “is” is referring to the subject “all”.

So, you have a singular subject “all” and therefore a singular verb “is”.

I think the other explanation is more accurate, since all is understood before honor.

All glory and (all-understood) honor is Yours…

It would be all and all, which would still need the grammar book explanation.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to answer this grammatical question. It makes a lot more sense now!
