I have checked the GIRM on this and did find the answer, so I am hoping that someone here can help me. If possible, links to documentation would be helpful.

This morning, the priest used the Eucharistic prayer for the Mass of Reconciliation 2, however he used the Preface for the 2nd Sunday of Lent. It is my understanding that EP1 and the EP’s for Masses of Reconciliation and for use with children, have there own prefaces that are not inter-changable. Is this correct?

I know that the priest has some lee-way in his choice of EPs, but I was also under the impression that “mixing & matching” was not allowed.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Your priest was correct.

Eucharistic Prayer IV (not I) is the one with an invariable preface.

The Masses of Reconciliation can go with any preface containing themes of reconciliation or forgiveness, the Lenten prefaces are specifically recommended.

I can’t give you online documentation, this information is written in red in the priest’s version of the Missal. There was a Zenit question about it last year: ewtn.com/library/liturgy/zlitur305.htm

I don’t know about Masses with children - I spend most of my effort connected with them in trying to make sure they’re not used with 15-16 year olds so I’ve never actually read the instructions for their use. It would seem as though any Preface using appropriate language could be used, as the nature of the season and times of celebration should be taken into consideration with children as well as adults, but that’s just common sense rather than documentary evidence!

Bingo!..here it is:

From the USCCB website…from the USCCB’s pdf on the upcoming changes to the Mass starting in advent 2011…
**EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS **
**FOR RECONCILIATION **

The Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation may be used in Masses in which the mystery of reconciliation is conveyed to the faithful in a special way, as, for example, in the Masses for Promoting Harmony, For Reconciliation, For the Preservation of Peace and Justice, In Time of War or Civil Disturbance, For the Forgiveness of Sins, For Charity, of the Mystery of the Holy Cross, of the Most Holy Eucharist, of the Most Precious Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, as well as in Masses during Lent. Although these Eucharistic Prayers have been provided with a proper Preface, they may also be used with otherPrefaces that refer to penance and conversion, as, for example, the Prefaces of Lent.

And I would bet that this practice is and has been current re: these Eucharistic prayers since their inception.

Lastly…this PDF is really very, very well done and beautifully informing about the new language and the “ritual” parts/precepts.
