Way back in the dark ages of the early to mid 1970’s, my older brother was involved in the Charismatic movement on Long Island, NY. They met at Fordham University campus, and I remember joining him once there for Mass. They sang the Eucharistic prayer with (as far as I can remember) a gentle, guitar based tune.

The words of the prayer were modified to fit the rhythm, and maybe to add rhyme (it’s been too long), and I learned that it wasn’t approved, and was forbidden by the bishop, at which point they stopped.

My questions are

Did anyone else ever hear this?
Is there a recording of it on the 'Net?

Thanks.

Questions:
  1. No, sorry
  2. I doubt it.
My concerns;
This was not allowed. This is still not allowed. The Eucharistic Prayer can only be sung to the melodies prescribed in the Missal. To do otherwise is a Liturgical Abuse.

Bearing in mind, that it is not traditional to sing the Consecration Prayers.

Also, in the Novus Ordo Missae (The New Order of Mass) it is not permitted to have any Music playing during the Eucharistic Prayer.

To abuse the Liturgy is equal to abusing the teachings of Christ and his Church; Lex Credendi, Lex Orandi (The law of belief is the lex of prayer)

Save the Liturgy, Save the World!

Yes, I understand that it is not allowed in a Mass. I was hoping to find it to listen to it as music.

And I was wondering if any one else had heard it.

I guess I got my answer. 🙂

Hmmm, need a sig. How about

“But God only gives, and He has only Himself to give, and He, even He, can give it only in
those conditions which are Himself.” - Charles Williams, War in Heaven (1930)

I can only think of two mass settings set to full music. They are Marty Haugen’s “Mass of Creation” and Michael Joncas’ “No Greater Love.” I have found them both as mp3s in the popular music sites like amazon and itunes. There well could have been mre mass settings right after Vatican II, before ICEL was created and then revised.

As per music not being permitted during the Eucharistic Prayer, that depends on one’s definition of the word “music.” The 2010 General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM) notes that musical intonations (some call these chants) are allowed in Eucharistic Prayers I-IV. You can read and hear more about this in two locations:

and

Blessings! 👍

Also, more recently, to "Lex Credendi, Lex Orandi " has been added “Lex Vivendi.” How we believe is how we pray and how we live.
