Is there a Eucharistic prayer that says “He broke it and gave it to his friends…”. The priest at a local parish has been saying this lately and I was just wondering if this is correct and/or acceptable. Thank you for your help.

According to my missal, all three of the Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children use the words “friends” rather than “disiples” or “apostles.”

The Eucharistic Prayers for children may only be used when a substantial majority of the congregation is children. e.g. Mass for the opening day of school. It would probably never apply on a regularly scheduled Sunday Mass. The priest is not at liberty to mix and match parts of different Eucharistic Prayers. The substitution of friends for disciples often relates to the question of the ordination of women. If Jesus was saying to his friends, “do this,” then the Eucharist can be confected by any friend of Jesus rather than only by someone in a constituted order.

Nobody has the right to compose their own Eucharistic Prayer unless allowed by the Holy See… It is in the Sacramentum Concilium. If a priest composed his own Eucharistic Prayer then that is an abuse and the laity has the right to talk to the priest about the matter.
