All religious people; be they Jewish; Christian; Muslim or for that matter any religion - should be against the evils of a state creating discriminating and anti-religious laws.

What private businesses such as Airports do with regards to exersising their rights to refuse service is their business. However; in public places paid for by taxpayers money there should be no discrimination against religious dress or practice.

Just because some nations (such as Saudi Arabia, Switzerland & France) have regulations against other peoples religious rights does not mean the civilised world should follow suit. We should be setting a good example.

Secular Europe sees the taking away of a females face as dehumanizing thus to them this falls under human rights which neither a religion, husband or father can enforce upon a woman. Even if she says that its her choice the belief that it is her choice under threat of getting her nose and ears cut off like the Time magazine cover of the Afgani victim a couple of weeks ago.

The burka looks ridiculous. You don’t see Ralph Lauren or Donatella Versace fashion shows with burka-wearing models strutting down the runway.

…just sayin’…

That wasn’t an argument. It was a tongue-in-cheek remark merely noting that the burka isn’t being worn for fashion or functionality … especially in hot weather. So, for those who ‘choose’ to wear the burka, we know it’s not for those reasons. The question then becomes - what is their ‘choice’ based upon? If it’s for religious adherence reasons, is it really a choice?

Burkas and other oversized garments (such as overcoats worn over ordinary clothing) can conceal explosives that can be used in terrorist attacks. They have even been worn by men to effect a terrorist act. This is just a FACT.

I would think that thoughtful Muslims would reject the Burka as a symbol that they reject terrorism. But they don’t. So what does THAT mean?

We already know that the Burka is not religious, but instead cultural. It’s not in the Koran. So this is NOT about religion. As such, it is not PROTECTED by any law regarding religious freedom.

I submit that people should be free to demonstrate their cultural views. But persons wearing Burkas should not be free to go anywhere that large numbers of people are, to protect such people from acts of terrorism. This includes airplanes but also includes many other places. People who wear the Burka CHOOSE to wear the Burka, and that’s fine. That doesn’t mean that they are free to populate places where there are large numbers of people, where their garment could conceal a bomb.

Their is nothing in Islam that force the girl to wear burka, it’s only a tradition + a form of religious radicalism.
But what’t happening now these days is that So Many muslims are forcing their women to wear this burka thing for political reasons, and to show that " Hey We are muslims! Watch out!"

the burka is simply a synbol of oppression
With all respect, but I disagree with all of you on this matter…
The Burka is there to protect the woman from the eyes of the lustful men, from those men whom cannot control themselves…

Com’on man! Are You Serious???

Yes, I’m serious, let any woman walk by herself here in Saudi Arabia without burka and see how many cars would stop and beep for her.
And in the west, burka would add additional protection for woman against rapists.

When your culture demands four witnesses to believe a rape occurs, thus no convictions for the crime it stands to reason that you can convince yourself that men are in control because of the clothing factor. And that women are saved from the prying eyes that they face elsewhere. Also there is not the social teaching that rape is about power projection and not sexual attraction

If that’s so, then how pathetic those men are. The men need to learn self control. If men are lustful and out of control, it is THEIR behavior that needs to be changed. Oppressing women is not the solution.

The Burka is a symbol of oppression of women. At least in the West, it is most often not a choice of the woman but is forced upon her by a male family member. As such, it is a symbol of tyranny. I recently read an article on just this subject where the author advocated that the burka should be viewed with the same distaste as the Nazi Swastika or the robes of a Ku Klux Klansman. This may seem odd at first, but when you consider that all three symbols ~ the Burka, the Swastika and the Klan robe ~ stand for tyranny, oppression, and subjugation, then relating them together makes sense on some level. It’s challenging, to be sure, but it makes sense.

Some will say the Burka is a symbol of religious expression. It is not. It is a cultural expression mostly imposed on women, not chosen by them. But even if it WERE a religious symbol, that does not overcome the fact that it is also a symbol of oppression and subjugation. In the West, we do not treat women that way. So if Muslims wish to immigrate to Europe, or anywhere else in the West, they will need to adapt, and part of that is giving up the Burka.

I do not like the burka but I against a ban because it is only a step from the European government to destroy all religions except atheism.
They also on the way to ban cross in schools or other public built.
Female teachers must not cover there head in Germany.
And in Europe it will be banned to wear a cross openly, one day.
And many other anti religions laws will come.

I wasn’t aware that Atheism is a religion…

Indeed.

Further, the Burka is not a religious symbol, it is cultural, so comparisons to truly religious symbols are not valid.

Persons who are determined to wear the Burka, or impose it on the female population, need to remain in Muslim countries. The Burka does not belong in the West.

The Burka is there to protect the woman from the eyes of the lustful men, from those men whom cannot control themselves…
If that is the reason for the Burka, then the problem is with the religion and culture that does not teach men to practice self control in sexual matters. Any religion that promises 77 virgins only increases the lustful desires in men. If men are not able to control themselves, then why aren’t men required to wear metal briefs with lock that can only be opened by their wives, or parents, if the man is single. If women not wearing burkas sexually arouses men, then men should be forced to wear horse blinders and a neck brace so they cant turn their heads and look lustfully at a woman. If caught turning their head, then the man should be arrested for attempted rape and need the witness of four women to clear him of those charges. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

And in the west, burka would add additional protection for woman against rapists.
On the contrary, that would only arouse perverts even more; wanting to know what the woman is hiding underneath all those garments. What’s to prevent a old bearded pervert from wearing a burka and going into the ladies room to satisfy his lustful desires as nobody can see anything but their eyes.

Edit to change a word
