I think the extreme right in America is vehemently anti-European and uses hugely exagerated tales of secularisation an Islamification as an excuse to fantasize about US domination of Europe. Much of this is fueled by the RW media but there is also a grass roots antipathy of all things Old World.

Well this European is giving such sentiment nothing but the utter conempt and digust it deserves. Rascist, supremacist, spiteful and aggressive bile that it is. The most distressing thing about reading such vile lies is the fact that such rhetoric often precedes direct action.

May God have mercy on the hate-filled souls that spout such slanderous garbage.

i am not european but the statistics about church attendance in europe do not lie or the number of catholics do they?

i don’t know where you have been the last 30 years, but a lot of the muslims have been naughty!

they - meaning the muslim terrorists - have killed people in israel, africa, lebanon, spain, england, holland, and the united states (and i am probably leaving out a few countries.) australia, indonesia.

they have attacked in schools, on buses, in airplanes, in nightclubs at embassies.

are we supposed to look the other way?

i would think the europeans would be running to their churches to embrace their christian faith instead of staying away.

what has happened to catholicism in europe or christianity in europe in general?

at one time in history you could not separate europe and catholicism
and europe was the birthplace of protestantism.

I believe history reflects that the U.S. essentially had all of Western Europe under its military control after 1945 and…let it go. There is no good reason to believe the U.S. wants to dominate Europe.

One should not readily assume Americans hate everything “old world”. Look around in the U.S. and you see European everything; from the people themselves, to housing styles, to what we eat and drink, to Italian shoes, Spanish furniture, European painting reproductions in our houses. Go to Cincinnati and there’s German stuff everywhere. Irish neighborhoods abound in virtually every city. Go to “The Hill” in St. Louis and order from an Italian restaurant in Italian, and you’ll get served what you ordered. There are more Poles living in Chicago than in Warsaw. We speak English, for goodness sake, though many speak Spanish and a handful along the Canadian border speaks French. Americans travel to Europe all the time. Much of the U.S. is profoundly European.

As a European-American I can assure you that I do not have racial antipathies toward Europeans. Nor have I ever met a European-American who does. I know every town in Europe from which all my ancestors came. I am particularly fond of the wine I import from one of them (Rotenburg, in Alsace); first because it’s wonderful stuff, and second because that’s where some of my ancestors came from.

It is precisely because we love Europe that we fear for her; like an adult child does for a parent.

Those who talk about Europe like its a den of iniquity.

Those who use phrases like “cheese-eating surrender monkeys” or “Eurotrash” and run sites like this;

Those who constantly wish to interfere in European nations’ labour laws, healthcare and welfare state even though they have no right amd it has nothing to do with them.

Those who bluster and make veiled threats about the “hypothetical” military powre the US has over the EU.

Those who seek to demean and belittle and smear and demonise Europe as the source of all things anti-religious and depraved.

Not you or any other decent American. Just the Anti-Euro extreme right wing bigots.

You’re right there is still much love for Europe, especially in my generation where so many have had the chance to visit. However, this doesn’t change the fact that there has been strong anti-European sentiment in the US since the Iraq war and much of it has been fueled by Fox News and various right-wing pundits. Let’s remember that the “Freedom Fries” episode really did happen

i also am from a generation whose father fought in WWII in Germany to help free europe from hitler and his invading armies. how many dead american soldiers are still buried in europe? how many american soldiers lost their lives for the sake of helping europe remain free from what hitler’s master plan was?

i know of the catholic history in both of those countries. catholicism is a big part of their history.

Perhaps so, although the reverse could easily be argued. One look at Disney or Hollywood movies gives a very unpleasent message as to American perceptions of Europeans. Why do so many villains have German or English accents? What’s with the Italian and French stereoypes? I suggest, as Ed pointed out, that the RW pundits have contributed enormously to the Anti-Europeanism in the US.

I tried to be clear that I was talking about a small section of the US, that unfortunately is very vocal. The rest of America, the decent part, of course does not hold such prejudice. But thank you once again for your kind assurances.

I have lived a great part of my life in an English speaking country and my home language has changed several times. First it was French and then English and then Portuguese and then sometimes Portuguese sometimes English.

Why I say this is although English is the dominant language I am not an anglophile at heart. England is England and I love visiting it but…it is not Europe. Europe is not anglophone. So far on this thread we have heard mainly from anglophiles and it would be good to hear what real Europeans have to say (please do not be upset with me dear English people - I do love you, but…) Europeans are very different.

We have had some very interesting posts on this thread and we have had some goofy ones.

If we are to learn from each other let us hear more from the serious posts.
