As a young European, yesterday’s referendum in Ireland confirmed my what I had long suspected, that Europe is pretty much finished. When I was growing up, there were always two countries you could count on: Malta (my mother’s country) and Ireland (my neighour) but, in my own lifetime, both have fallen as Great Britain, France, Germany and pretty much every other country in Western Europe had before them. The last outposts appear to be Poland and Hungary. I am not posting this to bash Europe or any country in Europe. Europe is my home and I love her, but for what she was, not what she has become. Most people I come across are very self-centred and apathetic towards the world around them. It is like living in a nihilist bubble. Do any of you who are Europeans feel this way as well? 😦

I don’t feel Europe is finished, but that is because I am agnostic. I do see apathy and self-centredness, especially within the UK and Brexit and people promising what can never happen. It’s incredibly frustrating to me to see my country basically spiralling down a plughole whilst pretending otherwise, and I guess that’s how you’re seeing Ireland right now.

I don’t see apathy in Ireland, however. For this vote turnout was very high and thousands flew home to make their vote for what they believed in. I wish more countries were interested in their politics to this extent.

Tbh the Yes campaign almost persuaded me (and I faced fairly little attack on this abortion issue from friends and I don’t even live in Ireland) to a subconscious level. You’ve got to learn from them, pray a nice serenity prayer and try to care for women in crisis situations. That’s the best we can do.

Christian-Europe is finished. There is no-longer any such thing as Christian politics, this is to say that law and politics no-longer reflects or functions in relation to the Christian belief. The system reflects a utilitarian pragmatic out-look which has nothing to do with religious truth. Morality is basically a humanistic venture that no-longer recognizes God as an authority. Friedrich Nietzsche predicted this. We killed God.

Does it really surprise you that as we approach the end of the world that human authority and the systems by which that authority functions will become increasingly nihilistic?

The system functions just as it would do if human-beings were just intelligent animals on top of a hierarchy of animals. It’s survival of the fittest. We are no-longer sacred.

Some of the greatest saints came from France. My brother always said that morality and ethics were like a big pendulum that swings back and forth. It is time for the pendulum to swing back to where it should be. A new miracle wouldn’t hurt either.

Empires and civilizations rise and fall.
We are clearly in the falling action of Western Civilization.
I don’t know what will take its place. Possibly fresh energy from Africa.
It’s been interesting, if not comfortable, to watch.

In 400 hundred years the planet earth will crack open and a gigantic organism capable of trans-dimensional faster than light space travel will come out of it. It will be then that human beings will love each-other and there will be no poverty or evil in the world.
