What is so wrong about it?

Feel free to give opinions and fact on this issue.

Thanks

I believe everything the Catholic Church teaches on life from the womb to the tomb.

My husband was away from the Church for a long time and finally went to confession four months before his death of cancer.

Someone might say - “why should he suffer since he is terminal, it should be right to euthanize.”

That is the way the world thinks. Our Lord is still gracing a person in this situation. My husband was able to say (in few words, due to medication) many things that were weighing on his mind. When all our children arrived (eight) he died peacefully as we said prayers around his bedside. Also, the Lord also uses this time to purify a person and prepare them for death.

The Lord needs to be able to do what He wants to do. While we do not need to use extraordinary means to keep a terminal patient alive, we do need to allow them to die naturally.

Often times I find people get confused about what euthanasia is.

There is nothing wrong with refusing to take extraordinary means to sustain your life, that’s your choice.

There is something wrong with killing yourself.

I can do no better than to quote the following from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. [Emphasis are mine]

paragraph 2276
Those whose lives are diminished or weakened deserve special respect. Sick or handicapped persons should be helped to lead lives as normal as possible.
paragraph 2277
Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons.** It is morally unacceptable**.
Thus an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. The error of judgment into which one can fall in good faith does not change the nature of this murderous act, which must always be forbidden and excluded.
paragraph 2278
Discontinuing medical procedures that are burdensome, dangerous, extraordinary, or disproportionate to the expected outcome can be legitimate; it is the refusal of “over-zealous” treatment. Here one does not will to cause death; one’s inability to impede it is merely accepted. The decisions should be made by the patient if he is competent and able or, if not, by those legally entitled to act for the patient, whose reasonable will and legitimate interests must always be respected.
paragraph 2279
Even if death is thought imminent, the ordinary care owed to a sick person cannot be legitimately interrupted. The use of painkillers to alleviate the sufferings of the dying, even at the risk of shortening their days, can be morally in conformity with human dignity if death is not willed as either an end or a means, but only foreseen and tolerated as inevitable Palliative care is a special form of disinterested charity. As such it should be encouraged.

I pray by the grace to stay in line with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. It is objectively morally wrong. This is the reality. NO matter what we can hold in our opinions or our beliefs does not change that this is wrong.

I hope that this helps.

God bless.

Why is the society so encouraged by many to end the lives of those who are suffering?

Is this some new ideology?

thanks everyone.

If all the “world” sees is that we need to make life better in the here and now, and that there is no God to worship or moral code to follow, then the “world” sees it as a good thing. (same with abortion, loose sexual morals, etc.)

As practicing Christians we need to bring the truth of Christ to them.

I don’t even know how to answer this. Life is an end in itself; it needs no justification.

Considering the position by default is more or less anti-euthanasia, I think the onus is on the pro-euthanasia crowd to justify it.

Is there a site I can go to for some research on this subject?

it is murder of an innocent person
society is moving in this direction since so much financial burden of health care and end of life care devolves on society, for cost saving reasons.
immoral and illogical but there it is
search on Catholic bioethics and you should find some good material
