Hello, I am currently discussing topics in Euthanasia in one of my classes and I was hoping that some of you might be able to provide me with some links to some very informative sites on the subject. It doesn’t matter if it is brief or very in-depth. I am somewhat more appealed by brief explanations just to get the general understanding of how to argue in favor of the Church teaching, but as I gain an understanding, some articles that are more detailed would be nice as well.

Thanks!

The Church’s position on euthanasia:

CCC 2277 Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable.

Thus an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. The error of judgment into which one can fall in good faith does not change the nature of this murderous act, which must always be forbidden and excluded.

Gunnerz,

People are providing plenty of sources for you to use to support your position so I just want to make a personal comment on euthanasia. The Catholic Church teaches that abortion and euthanasia are always and completely unacceptable (see the sources already provided). At each Sunday mass we pray that people will protect life from ‘conception to natural death’. Pro-choice people cannot point to a single supporting paragraph in scripture or teachings that support abortion or euthanasia, not one. So I suggest you pose that question to you classmates…simply ask those that are pro-euthanasia to provide sources, scripture passages or teachings that support euthanasia to compare to your sources that oppose it. And be prepared to respond to the big situation story. I’ll bet you a dollar to a donut that someone will come up with this horrific story about a person in extreme pain, blind, can’t walk, can’t speak or hear, are living in complete poverty and have no family and then ask, with “Isn’t it merciful to end their life?” Of course the story is hogwash…but I’ll bet you get it.

There was just an article in the Catholic Sentinal of Portland about a European country, in shich their highest court has said that mental illness may be grounds for granting someone the right to suicide. You might look for articles on it, as it has to do with the “slippery slope” arguemnt.
