Is it possible for a Catholic to be considered “evangelical”? (For that matter, what exactly does “evangelical” mean?) Or is “evangelical” strictly a Protestant term?

We are all called to evangelize by virtue of our baptism and confirmation. Catholics are evangelicals. We teach the Catholic faith to others by our words and deeds.

To evangelize is to teach the faith and that Jesus is our Savior. I don’t mean to sound protestant, but to evangelize is to bring the good news of salvation to others, those who have no knowledge and to those who have incorrect knowledge. As the second poster said, we do this by word and by deed (action). Action does speak louder than words. As he said, we are all evangelizers by virtue of our Baptism and Confirmation.

Certainly. Many good, orthodox orders refer to themselves as “evangelical” orders, because a major point of their mission is to spread the good news.

After all, one of the greatest religious orders is the Ordo Praedicatorum, the Order of Preachers. Certainly, St. Dominic was no TV Evangelist (or else he wouldn’t be a saint 😛 ), rather, he was a Catholic preacher who could definitely be called evangelical.

At least for us laity (and this is really true for the whole Church) we are useless if we do not evangelize, as the Second Vatican Council decreed:

Indeed, the organic union in this body and the structure of the members are so compact that the member who fails to make his proper contribution to the development of the Church must be said to be useful neither to the Church nor to himself.

[The laity] exercise the apostolate in fact by their activity directed to the evangelization and sanctification of men and to the penetrating and perfecting of the temporal order through the spirit of the Gospel. In this way, their temporal activity openly bears witness to Christ and promotes the salvation of men. Since the laity, in accordance with their state of life, live in the midst of the world and its concerns, they are called by God to exercise their apostolate in the world like leaven, with the ardor of the spirit of Christ.
