Evangelical christian schools vs. ?

I will take the points

Jean,

Thanks for your kind words, and wise advice. Yes, teaching Christianity in the Catholic tradition is something I need to grapple with. I don’t know if this school requires non-Catholics to attend religion classes or not. We are located in the Pacific Northwest. Our public schools are in turmoil…very underfunded. We originally came from Indianapolis and although the public schools would not be my first choice, I would not feel so much hesitation to put them in public school there as I do where we are presently located. But, thanks again Jean for really laying out specific issues I need to ponder.

As an evangelical pastor’s wife and mother of a son who attends an Evangelical school let me explain the whole idea of sharing your testimony with the school. Basically, they just want to make sure what is taught at school will not be devisive in the home. And that the home will uphold the values of what is being taught in the school.
I think there’s something else at work. Many evangelicals send their kids to a Christian school (or homeschool them) in order to keep them away from “bad” social influences. Allow too many “non-Christian” kids into a school, and you make it unappealing to evangelical parents who want to protect their kids from the evil world.
so when non believers (those who do not have any faith that Jesus Christ is the son of God)
But that’s not what we are talking about. I worked temporarily for an evangelical school where the question asked of parents was, “on what basis do you know that you are going to heaven.” If they mentioned works (never mind that many Protestants would agree that works are evidence of true faith), they didn’t count as “Christians.” (This school didn’t require all the families to be “Christians,” but they had a certain percentage they wanted to maintain.)
One of our local schools might be closing next year and there are about 15 of us evangelicals that have been looking at a local Catholic school, but I think I will have to show my friends this forum. We don’t want our kids to be greeted with such negativity.
Why would you think that this forum is relevant, given that you admit that your experience at this school has been quite different.

It probably is good for your friends to know that not all Catholics are as gracious and ecumenical as the ones they may have encountered. But it would be tragic and foolish to assume that this forum is typical of “real-life” Catholics. Why do you think the Catholics here are always complaining about their parishes and their priests?

Edwin
