Katholikos:
There is a strong possibility that your daughter will come home from the conference having “accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior” and therefore she will be “saved,” and you may be told that you are “not saved,” and that the Bible proves that the Catholic Church is wrong.

Unless, that is, you have Protestant-proofed her. Does she know the history of the Bible and the Church? That the Church wrote the NT? Know that the Church teaches what the Apostles taught? Know that there are ten jillion ways to interpret the Bible? Know that the Bible is not the sole rule of faith?

I was a Protestant. I know the drill. Someone will be assigned to “lead her to Christ.” They will tell her – in an emotional moment --that Catholics are not saved. That’s the purpose of inviting her.

I’d be scared to death to allow a child of mine to attend a Protestant Bible study unless I debriefed and deprogrammed him/her after every single session.

She might come back brain washed, soul washed, and all kinds of cleansing? 😃

I think only good things can come from this experience to be honest. Remember, Evangelical tradition is very much Catholic. She will likely find it amazing that other friends of hers, that aren’t catholic, are doing very catholic things.
Evangelical tradition is very much Catholic? NOT.

This is bull-oney.

Been there. Done that.

as a former evangelical, I can say that evangelicals grossly misunderstand Catholicism, and evangelicals generally take it as a great mission to convert Catholics because some of them believe that Catholicism is a false religion.

Personally, I don’t think it’s a very good idea unless your daughter has a firm faith and won’t be swayed by their arguments of “accepting Christ” to be saved and “where is X in the bible”.
it has the potential to cause a lot of confusion.

Evangelicals will always be critical of the Church’s teaching authority and Tradition, and are very suspicious of the Sacraments. they erroneously think they are works when they really are channels of God’s sanctifying grace and the means of salvation.

My 16yr old daughter wants to go to an Evangelical conference with friends at her school who are in a bible study with her. Should I worry about the influence from them on her own Catholic faith?
One Mom to another Mom,
I lost a son to the Evangelicals and I can tell you it can be a long time before they turn to home again…it was several years of this son attacking everything we stood for as Catholics… “we were lost”…“luckwarm at best”… on and on…it was really overtaxing at times…I held to the fact that he** was a thinker** and that as time went along he would begin to see the worts and sure enough he did…but it was certainly not good for a long time. I am a senior now and have just allowed several relationships to fade away… I can not handle the nonsence, arrogance and even the mocking of these folks. To ask a Catholic if they know Jesus as their Lord and Savior is to lack humility and to show deep ignorance of Catholicism. I will not have it any more. They all have an agenda…to get Catholics saved !!! I am adamently Catholic…more so than ever before in my life. I think we have been far too understanding and need to act more firmly with those who lack respect for us or for the Catholic Church. In my lowly opinion…sending a young person off with them to a bible study is definately a mistake… .they are not interested in making that young person a better Catholic to be sure!!! JUST SAY "NO"
God Bless You,
Shalom,

Catherine

Well said Catherine!

I am not a senior and I haven’t lost a child to Evangelicalism yet (and hopefully never will). But I definitely am more adamantly Catholic than ever. And I too have no tolerance for the arrogance and ignorance of evangelical Protestants who do not view Catholics as Christians, but as targets for their evangelization! I am particularly concerned when those evangelization efforts are targeted at our Catholic youth and young adults. It reminds me of the Moonies and Hari Krishnas of the 1970s and 1980s, though at least the evangelicals are Christian.

I am a single woman who does not have children but i grew up in the pentecostal church of god of prophecy have been catholic since december 1993 I would not let your daughter go because theytend to focus especially on converting people that they feel are not chrtistians especially catholics which theyfeel are in the corrupt system of the antichrist I would talk with the youth director of your own parish and discuss having scripure study for the youth there along with eaucharistic adoration with some fun activities added in because the young people are the future of the church

I was “saved” in an evangelical church when I was 18 yo. I am now 60. For years I heard only negative thought from evangelical preachers about the Catholic Church.
About 2 years ago I began to take a serious look at the Catholic Church from a Catholic perspective. I started reading about the saints and the church fathers and much more. EWTN is now my favorite station to watch. I am going to Buffalo to hear Father Corapi (one of my favorite priests). I intend to enroll this fall in RCIA in my local parish. In my heart I am now a Catholic, and cannot wait to experience the sacraments of the church for myself. My wife thinks I have deserted my faith, not expanded it.
I have 2 daughters, one of which is seriously looking into the Catholic Church. She is a devoted Christian, but just never heard the other side of the issue (like me).
I pray the rosary every day and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy when I can and attend mass on Sunday. I LOVE THE CHURCH and now agree with the teachings which I formerly rejected.
They will try to get your daughter saved by accepting Christ, which is a good thing; however it will put her against the Catholic Church in general if she asks questions or not.
Scripture says "train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he (or she) will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6 KJV. What you have put into her life as a child by way of morality etc will remain with her; however the very aggressive evangelicals will try to turn her against the Catholic Church. Be cautious!

The origonal post on here is about 4 years old…so I am guessing it is fully resolved by now 🙂

That said, I couldn’t miss an oppertnutyity to say how glad I am that thequeen and dpaul1948 have found their way home to the Church! dpaul1948 - I love your story and am so happy you “got the other side” of the story. Hooray.

Hi M,

I wouldn’t worry to much about it. I am an Evangelical and went to these as a kid myself. The general purpose for the most part is to expose newcomers to the Gospel of Christ and provide them and opportunity for the Spirit to work in their heart. Secondly there is a big focus on “right” behavior for adolescents… the dangers of premarital relations, drugs, alcohol and so forth.

The only thing I might be concerned about, is that perhaps her friends feels she “needs” to be saved. I wouldn’t be offended by that, if I were you, if that is their concern it is a concern born out of love. Where there is love, there is respect.

Perhaps this would be an excellent opportunity for your daughter to assure them, either through inaction or action that she does indeed know Christ.

That is all a bit superficial though, most kids go to those things because of the live music and their are lots of other kids their. IMO, your worst problem would be if she met and EV guy that she thought was hot and he called her up for a date.

Regards,

Mudcat

You know, probably the best advice I can give you is this. Explain your concerns to her… whatever they may be. Then give her a chance to address those concerns. If you feel after such a discussion, she is going to be fine. Then let her be fine. If she doesn’t satisfy your concerns, then you have established a valid reason for her not to go.
