Well we most certainly don’t worship Mary, though she is blessed. In fact, we believe she is the creature which is most conformed to Gods Will and Jesus. We also beleive she is the only human (as in human strictly speaking as opposed to the Christ who is both God & Human) spared original sin.I want to read a book that explains common Protestant misconceptions in Catholicism. For example, most of my evangelical friends will say “Catholics worship Mary.” A Catholic friend of mine explained this isn’t true. It is these kind of issues I would like to learn more about (Protestant misconceptions).
We do pray to Mary for intercession, in the same way the early Israelites asked Moses to pray for intercession (personally). The reason is scrpiture clearly states “a righteous man’s prayers avails much”, well you can’t get any better than the most conformed creature to God’s will.
Now the next typical objection is “you can’t pray to the dead”, some times this is said in a practical sense, other times it’s more accuatory than that. We get charged with necromancy a lot. Well lets remember a couple things:
Spritis in heaven, do know what’s going on, on earth. There are a number of scriptual references for this. From “The saints will be as Angels”, to “There is more rejoicing in heaven over the conversion of one sinner than there is for a righteous man” and on from there. Clearly the saints in heaven know what is happening on earth, they can hear our prayers.
How does this work? Well you need to understand the communion of saints. For starters, relating to “necromancy” which I discussed earlier. Remember it was written “I am not God of the dead, but of the living”. The saints in heaven aren’t dead, but alive in heaven in the presence of our lord. Now all members of the Church, including the saints are members of Christ’s mystical body. Jesus is the God Head, we are the bits and pecies of the neck, torso, arms, legs etc. If you want to pray to a saint, you can think of it as a nerve impuls running from the left hand (us the living), through God the head (the right hand), then if (when) the saint prays an intercessory prayer that prayer is another nerve impuls gonig back to the God head again.
When God receives the prayer, he answers it in the manner which is truely best for you, and his plan for you. Maybe that isn’t always what we think we want, but it’s always what is best for us.
I know I left a lot of scriptual support out, I’m kind of busy at work and I"m taking a lot of time already just to write this. Hopefully someone else can fill in the blanks, or if not I can come back. Ultimatly I would suggest some of the books I already recommended, or I would also recommend
Bible Proofs for Catholic Truths. It’s really more of an apologetics book, but it’s VERY affordable, it quotes from the NKJV bible, and it breaks down all (or most all) catholic beliefs Protistants would be interested in learing about.
