Evangelicals: How do you know you have "Saving Faith"?

Wow - that was a long posting! So…who are those vessels of wrath and why are they vessels of wrath?
They are those who choose to deny the true Faith and refuse to enter the New Covenant. As I keep trying to help you understand, Paul is addressing contemporary, 1st Century Pharisaic theology, and so he employs the Pharisee’s own terminology. This is what Calvin never appreciated, and why modern-day Calvinists distort Paul (making him contradict himself - per 1 Tim. 2:4, etc.).
Romans 9:22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
Please note that Paul is speaking in a very Jewish way above; that is, he poses a rhetorical question (“What if”). He is playing off the theological language of contemporary Pharisees, who believed that only Jews were created for the Kingdom and Gentiles were created for destruction. Paul is not saying that this is so. He is essentially denying it, and his original audience would get this immediately; but, to see that, you have to read Romans in context. Sit down and read it in one sitting, as if you are listening to a sermon, and you will see that Romans is only about one thing: that inclusion of Gentiles is the plan of God, and the rejection of Pharisaic theology. Indeed, in the very next verse, 25, he continues:

"As indeed he says in Hosea, ‘Those who are not my people, I will call my people.’ "

Paul is speaking about membership in the Covenant, how Gentiles will be included, whereas some Jewish observers of the Law will not. And, the real meaning of the “vessels of wrath” is illustrated a little later in v.30ff, where he says:

“What then shall we say? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have achieved it, that is, righteousness that comes from faith, but that Israel, who pursued the Law of righteousness, did not attain to that Law? Why not? Because they did it not by faith, but as if it could be done by works. They stumbled over the Stone that causes stumbling.”

In other words, God did not actively decree that anti-Christian Jews be excluded from the Covenant and damned. Rather, He offered them mercy and truth through the Law, but they stumbled over it because they did not live the Law through faith, but proudly and hypocritically.

And the reality of this is hammered home a few verses later in Rom. 10:1ff, where Paul continues:

“Brothers, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God on their behalf is for salvation.”

If these people (the anti-Christian Jews) were truly vessels of wrath that are predestined by God’s will unto damnation (as Calvin taught and as Calvinists believe), then how can Paul pray for them in hope of their salvation??? 🙂 That makes no sense. In this verse (Rom 10:1) Paul is saying the same thing that he says in 1 Tim 2:1-4, where he asks for prayers for everybody because GOD “wills that all men be saved and come to a knowledge of the Truth.” So, again, it is a matter of being part of the “elect” of the Covenant, that is, being in the Church or outside of the Church. It is not a matter of one’s ultimate predestination to heaven or hell. This is not what is being addressed at all.
How does Pharaoh and Esau fit into this “group of wrath”?
Again, Paul is using images of the Covenant and divisions of the Covenant. Jacob inherits the Covenant; Esau does not. Likewise, God calls Moses and the Israelites out of Egypt in order to establish them as a Covenant people in opposition to the Egyptians (see 1 Peter 2:10: “once you were no people”). Paul’s original audience (steeped in Pharisaic theology) would have understood these allusions immediately. They are types, images; not references to the individuals per se. Also, Romans never directly says that Esau or Pharaoh are “vessels of wrath.” You are just assuming that.
It seems to me they were individuals chosen as such (vessels of wrath) “being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand”…Was it something that Esau did on his own that cuased him to be one of the vessels of wrath?
I have said it several times now: You are a victim of a Calvinist mentality which you bring to Scripture, and thus force-fit the historical text into your preconceived notions. You need to step back from this and read Romans in its intended historical context if you wish to understand God’s Word properly. You seem either unwilling or unable to do this, however.

The children of God, apophasis, are heirs. An heir, by definition, has not taken possessio of his inheritance yet.
Sorry buddy, not true according to Christ’s own words:John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. And the Apostle John wrote for this very purpose:1 John 5:9-13 "If we receive the testimony of men (like mikeledes), the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that He has testified concerning His Son. The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son.

And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life."I must and will believe the testimony of God, Mike, for it is greater than the testimony of men like you who have not believed the testimony God has given concerning His Son and the life that is in Him. You see, Mike, eternal life is “in His Son - not ourselves.” And every true believer is no longer “in Adam,” but “in Christ” the “Last Adam.”

The one who has “saving faith” knows and accepts these things God has testified concerning His Son and the life which is in Him.

.
Funny because you ignore the testimony of God in the verses listed by Mike, Randy, and Odel that are contray to your beliefs!

OSAS is either a “part of yourself” or you must believe that scripture is not sufficent to support your beliefs alone, or both.

All it takes is one verse to disprove OSAS because you rely on scripture to prove OSAS. You have received several verses that are in direct conflict with OSAS and your defination of saving faith. Yet, you still believe that your house of cards will stand without the bottom floor in a blowing wind. Assuming that your wordsmithing can somehow justify your beliefs that are in conflict with scripture.

So you retreat to “your version” of truth, thinking that we can say anything we want to disprove OSAS because none of us can speak truth because we don’t believe as you do.

Excellant defense! You can’t be right, because I have to be.

I reaffirm what I said in my previous post, Apophasis. Our inheritance is the kingdom of God, the consummation of our present partcipation in the life of God (i.e. the “have eternal life” verses you love to use). We do not have possession of this inheritance until after we have been judged.

Matthew 25:24

**34"Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." **

Hebrews 10:36

36For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.

And what has been promised is our eternal inheritance. Reception of this inheritance occurs after we have done the will of God. In other words, in the future. You chose to ignore the plain words of these Scripture passages.

God Bless,
Michael

I did a survey of the Scriptures for the concept of inheritence in another thread on Eternal Life. Here and here are my findings.

Matthew 25:24

34"Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."
The problem with all your quotes is they’re taken our of context.

In this Matthew passage Jesus is talking to a specific people, His Gentile “sheep” on earth at the end of the age, the end of the Tribulation period that had just occurred. The “kingdom” they are about to inherit is the earthly, Messianic, Davidic Kingdom Christ is about to set up on earth for a thousand years. These are mortals and they enter the “kingdom” as mortals.
Hebrews 10:36
36For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.
And what has been promised is our eternal inheritance.
Again you interpret out of context. The promise here is not eternal life, which is a gift upon belief in Christ. The promise, in context, is revealed in the following verse thirty-seven, which is the coming of Christ.

Verse thirty-six does not state that their recieving of the promise is contingent on their endurance, but after they have done the will of God in this life they will receive it, and this by walking by faith:Heb. 10:35 - 11:2 "Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. FOR YET IN A VERY LITTLE WHILE, HE WHO IS COMING WILL COME, AND WILL NOT DELAY. BUT MY RIGHTEOUS ONE SHALL LIVE BY FAITH; and if he shrinks back, my soul has no preasure in him. But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul. Now faith is the assurance of {things} hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. Those Hebrew believers were not to throw away their confidence (boldness). That is, to leave the path of simple faith. This simple faith was enormously bold for the Hebrew believer who had been taught from youth to stand back from the presence of God; that he could not enter: only priests could; his path was to fulfill religious obligations only (sound familiar?); never come boldly to God by himself (cf. Heb. 5:16).

To the Hebrew believer in those early days of the Church, such boldness toward God, such personal confidence, such consciousness of the absence of any condemnation, or any conditions whatsoever, was unheard of. Just as Paul said:2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, {he is} a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.To this day this confidence, this boldness toward God by those with true saving faith, whether Jew or Gentile, is constantly challenged by Satan whose threat is, You are in presumption: cast away this boldness and return to religion. But God’s Word from the beginning is “Cast it not away.” HE LOVES IT - to the glory of the Person and work of His Son.

The testimony of God is that we who are of “saving faith” are in His Son in whom is this life. And this life is as eternal (everlasting) as the resurrected Son Himself. The true believer can no more lose this life he has being now in the resurrected Christ than the resurrected Christ Himself can die again and return to the grave.

I am an amillenialist, and so are most Calvinists and other mainline Protestants. Secondly, the kingdom being referred to is not the Messianic Kingdom, but the kingdom of heaven/God. How do we know this?

Matthew 25:41,46

**41"Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;

46"These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." **

The unrighteous are judged and cast into the eternal fire. However, if we interpret the passages literally on the “Millenium” in Revelation, we find that “casting into the fire” is supposed to happen after the “Great White Throne” judgement. Both the “Great White Throne” judgement and the judgment in Matthew 25 are the same Last Judgement.

Now compare this to John 5:28-29

28"Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
29and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

Note it says “an hour” in which Jesus will come and **all **of the dead (both righteous and unrighteous) will arise and will be judged. Compare John 5:29 with Matthew 25:46. The kingdom in Matthew 25, Apophasis is not a 1000 year kingdom, but the eternal kingdom of God:

2 Peter 1:10-11

10Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;
11for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

Also note that the righteous are described in Matthew 25:46 as entering eternal life.
Again you interpret out of context. The promise here is not eternal life, which is a gift upon belief in Christ. The promise, in context, is revealed in the following verse thirty-seven, which is the coming of Christ.
The promise, Apophasis, has been *explicitly *revealed earlier in Hebrews:

Hebrews 9:15

**15) … those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. **

Hebrews 4:1

**1Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it. **

And we know this inheritance is the kingdom of God.

James 2:5

5Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

Whe Jesus comes, He will bring with Him what was promised.

God bless,
Michael

apophasis or any protestant for that matter why cant you guys answer my questions? Maybe you guys can help apophasis because he is really really strugling here.

#1 Whats yoiur goal?

#2 what does it mean to be a partner of Christ?

#3 what race are you running

#4Do you really work out of fear of condemnation?

#5 what does it mean to be consecrated by the Blood of Christ?

#6 what does it mean to be DEAD and LOST?

#7 OK im really interested in YOUR definition of GRACE

#8(YOU) gentiles who stand by there faith they are save right?

#9Could you please explain how you seem to think in the next verse it is talking about a different YOU?

#10 are you telling me that by doing the will of God is not trusting in the work of God?

#11 are you dening the fact that it is God who does the working?

12 How do we pursue sanctification?

13 You say those who are saved will do good works but then you say you dont have to do them can you explain this to us?

Here you go I have made it simple for you. If you can answer these question using SCRIPTURE you might as well give up.

And dont use the excuse you will just say its my fallible interpritation. Because you are still here given us your fallible interpritation. Your just doing it avoiding simple biblical questions. whom a bible Christaian SHOULD be able to answer. I said SHOULD:D

2:4, etc.).
So then explain this to me…Is that what it says abot Esau??

Romans 9:10-12 NAS95 10 And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would stand, NOT BECAUSE OF WORKS but because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, “THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER.”

This sounds like God was the ultimate chooser…As we go on…what does the scripture say???

14 What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be!

I suppose that is a question that you yourself might ask…it would not be a question to ask if, in fact, the fault landed squarely on Esau and Esau alone. I think you have a problem here.

16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.

What did God say over and over about Pharaoh…I will harden his heart - I will harden his heart - I will harden his heart. And yes - there are scirptures that say Pharaoh hardened his heart as well. Ultimately, it was God removing all gracious influence and letting Pharoah go his own way - WHICH IS THE WAY WE WOULD ALL GO WITHOUT THE GRACIOUS CHOICE AND INFLUENCE OF GOD ON THE HUMAN HEART.

17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH.” 18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires.

So, now Paul has to make this statement…

19 You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?” 20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? 22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? 23 And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, 24 even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles.

The chosen of God - the called…are called unto salvation…the language is speaking of individuals - it is not of THE MAN who wills of THE MAN that runs - but God that shows mercy…it speaks of vessels of wrath - vessels of mercy - INDIVIDUALS.

Thsoe who are of the elect are chosen UNTO SALVATION…

2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has **chosen you from the beginning for salvation **through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.

Romans 8:30 NAS95 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

To my Evangelical friends, of whom I was once one, I would like to ask a question of you.

How do you know you have what you call saving faith?

In the parable of the sower, our Lord tells us that there are some who believe for a while and then they fall away. How are you certain that you are not one of these? What verses in the Bible would you use to back up your conviction, to be sure that you are in the faith?

I have asked this of an Evangelical here on this forum, but have not heard a response. I understand that he is busy, but I want to widen up the opportunity for more responses to this foundational question. I have also asked this of an Evangelical friend of mine almost 2 years ago, and to date he has not given an answer. He has not even attempted one.

In addition to this, I will pose a second related question:

How do you know you have the Holy Spirit to guide you into the right interpretation of the bible?

Many thanks.🙂

How does* any* Christian know that he or she is living by faith, & not by his opinions alone ? Yet one does.

How does one know, as a Catholic, that one really does believe in (say) God, or Jesus Christ ? Yet one does.

Faith is not a static thing - it is a growing thing: it becomes stronger by being exercised. It is strengthened by all sorts of things, constantly exercised: among which obedience to the light one already possesses is not least. So, in answer to the question - grace, grace, & more grace; with practice, practice, & more practice. (Obviously that is only a very small part of the answer.)

What we perceive by reason, though not without importance, is far from the whole of what we perceive; & reason is like a sense, for just there are five senses, not one, so reason is one way of perceiving what is true, & not the only one. And all of these are open to God; as Our Creator, He can draw us as He wishes, & be known to do so - however little one may be able to give an articulate rational analysis & convincing account of this to another person. Knowing God is far more important than being able to give a rationally invulnerable defence of the claim to do so: to know God is far more important than anything so theoretical.

That is like the difference between telling a joke, & anatomising it - do the latter, & the humour that made the joke effective is lost. By trying too hard to bring it wholly within the grasp of reason, one succeeds only in killing it.

That is why a living faith cannot be fully analysed - God is not going to put a Saint into an ecstasy for something as trivial & irreverent & impertinent as academic research: holiness is for bringing men nearer to God, not for anything so unimportant as the researches of doctors or academics. God is not a tame lion - so His ways always remain unsearchable, & past finding out. Faith, hope & love help us to know God, for they purely His gifts, perhaps because none is itself knowledge: they are better than any rational knowledge, because they have to do directly with the Love of God. To know God, one has to forget about knowledge - which is quite a paradox. The NT is full of paradoxes like that.

For faith to be amenable to scientific investigation, it would have to be repeatable - & graces be retained, consolations sought: which is precisely what St.John of the Cross warned his hearers against doing. Faith lets God do His Will; but do what St.John warns against, makes the Goodness of God subject to man’s will. And that is not tolerable; it is, in fact, a form of idolatry. To be able to dispense with the mysteriousness of faith would be a clear proof of its falsity So faith remains wholly mysterious, wholly grace-given, & beyond all really complete rational analysis; there is always far more to know of it than can be known

It’s one thing to agree with the content of creeds, it’s quite another to actually believe that He accomplished it all for you. The latter is a “saving faith.”

I am an amillenialist, and so are most Calvinists and other mainline Protestants.
I know. And that’s why you utterly fail to rightly divide the Word of truth.

Amillennialism is not a result of the study of God’s prophetic Word, but a lack of it. It is based on an erroneous presupposition.

Premillennialism, on the other hand, is based on a literal interpretation of the prophetic delineations of the future of Israel and the Kingdom of God.

In other words, it’s a result of allowing God’s prophetic Word to speak for itself rather than spiritualizing it to fit one’s own presupposition, i.e., the Church is now the new Israel.

Premillennialism is based on the “untenable” notion that God Himself lilterally had something to say concerning the future of the Church Christ is now building during this age and national Israel whose “fortunes” He promised to “restore” in the age to come. And what He revealed can be literally trusted.

WHAT? Trust God’s literal word on both salvation and prophecy? Blasphemy!!!

Up until Augustine the Church was predominately Premillennial. And rightly so. They accepted the “Jewish” understanding of the Kingdom. The verses you quoted need to be understood in context and in light of His revealed, prophetic Word.

But this is all the topic of another thread. The relevance being only that you form doctrines on passages that don’t apply to Christ’s Church, such as Matthew chapters 24 and 25.

Odell, Apophasis has already labored long and hard to address these questions. Search the thread on 'Works Salvation" and you can read his copious comments, studies, and polemics. At least do him the courtesy of not having to repeat himself. 👍

What’s your point in asking all these questions? What’s your goal?
How about this I will explain why I asked these question one question at a time.

question 1
(1 Pet 1:9) “As you attain the goal of your faith, salvation of your souls.” If we are saved once, saved forever, do we need to continue striving toward a goal? We must continue the journey because, even though one might find Christ at a single point in time, it is important to deepen the faith and strengthen the relationship in order to remain in Christ.

#1 Whats yoiur goal? bible says our goal of our faith is salvation. Does your faith have a goal?

question 2
(Heb 3:12-14) “We have become partners of Christ (Saved) if only we hold the beginning of the reality firm until the end.” Why do we have to hold it firm? We are saved.

#2 what does it mean to be a partner of Christ? I interprit being a partner with Christ as being saved. But the verse says only if you hold it firm until the end. Do you hold firm your partnerhood till the end.

question 3
(Heb 12:1) “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us.”

The bible says to run a race Catholic believe this race is our salvation. hence a process

#3 what race are you running

question 4
you originally posted
Any works on our part must result in fear of condemnation
So question # 4 was #4Do you really work out of fear of condemnation?

If so you must not trully trust in Christ.

question #5
is in response to

I said
Is someone who reconciled are they considered consecrated by the blood of Christ?

If so how do you interpret this verse?

(Heb10:24-31) “Do you not think that a much worse punishment is due the one who has contempt for the Son of God, considers unclean the covenant blood by which he was consecrated and insults the spirit of Grace.”

If one is saved by the blood of Jesus and later goes on to insult God by diminishing the power of Jesus’ blood, then the scripture says that punishment will be severe. You will become separated from God and his saving grace.

#5 If so how do you interpret this verse?

question 6
was a response to the prodigal son
you said
Your theology makes no sense.Where in the parable does it say that the father and son were enemies and there was need of reconciliation of the son to his father?
are you ready heres the question
#6 what does it mean to be DEAD and LOST?

continued…

question 7
was a response to one of your post where you ask were in the book of genesis does it mentioning Adam and Eve have the Grace of God. So I ask

#7 OK im really interested in YOUR definition of GRACE

question 8
is in response to
This is a general teaching addressed to “Gentiledom” which has now been given the gospel message of Christ and who stand only in their faith.
Rom. 11:20 “Quite right, they (Israel) were broken off for their unbelief and you (Gentiles) stand only by your faith”
And these Jesus said He NEVER knew.
so here is a question pertaining DIRECTLY to the exact same verse you quoted.

** #8(YOU) gentiles who stand by there faith they are save right?
ok well read how silly your interpritation sounds**

(Romens 11:20-22) "that is so they were broken off because of unbelife, but **YOU **are ther because of faith. So do not become haughty but stand in awe. for if God did not spare the natural branches he will not spare YOU either. See then the kindness and severity of God severity towards those who fell but Gods kindness to YOU, provided YOU remain in his kindness otherwise YOU too will be cut off.

Im guessing this YOU is no longer the Gentiles that are aved by there faith. Because it says they can be cut off.

question 9 is in the same area
#9Could you please explain how you seem to think in the next verse it is talking about a different YOU

question 10
is in response to this
The former trusts entirely in the work of Another, the latter in its own.
**#10 are you telling me that by doing the will of God is not trusting in the work of God?

#11 are you dening the fact that it is God who does the working?**

question 12
is one of mikes questions
# 12 How do we pursue sanctification?

the bible says we do it do you?

question 13 the question says it all
# 13 You say those who are saved will do good works but then you say you dont have to do them can you explain this to us?

of course you are:confused: because you have no answer. My point in asking these questions is because they are in response to some of your interpritaions of scripture. and a response to some of your comments.

Its called a debate. If you came to a Catholic Protestant debate and if the catholic could not answer not ONE question that the protestant asked. How do you think that debate would turn out. who do you think would win.

hate to put it this way but your loosing by a land slide. maybe if you answer some questions you could gain a little credibility. after all if this was a live audiance. They would be flocking to the Church after this debate.

ansewr the questions
If you cant you need to think long and hard about the church your in.

some of these questions I have asked have never been addressed by him. they are direct questions to some of the things he has said to me so I know he has not answered them. And If so he would show me where as everyone else does.
