In line with what we are talking about…the church and those who are saved are referred to often as the elect. This is clear from scripture. Elect is Christian and Christian is elect. There are no saved non-elect people (those that caught up in the dragnet as spelled out in the parable of the dragnet in Matthew 13 are not saved and then fall away - they are stowaways who will be cast aside in the judgment). As Romans 9 points out, the elect are made the elect by God’s gracious choice - in accordance with His purpose and His will. It is not by him that runs or him that wills but by God that shows mercy. So, the elect are not chosen in accordance with anything that they DO or WILL (although God mysteriously does all of this without violating our will). So, since God chooses the way He wills…and all of the elect are Chistians/all Christians are elect, once an elect one comes to Christ, they are saved forever from that point…

The objections that you have to this doctrine are built into the passage.

Ro 9:11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls,
12 it was said to her, “THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER.”
13 Just as it is written, “JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED.”
14 What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be!
15 For He says to Moses, “I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION.”
16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.
17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH.”
18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires.
19 You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?"
20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it?
21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?
22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?
23 And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory,
24 even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles.

Once Saved Always Saved…

2Pe 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;

Ac 13:48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

Ac 16:14 A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love
5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,

1Pe 5:13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.

1Pe 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Romans 8:30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

There are plenty of other passages indicating this.

Romans 8:12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh–
13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
14 **For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.**15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

Galatians 5:24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Yes - the wages of sin is death. This is explained in many places in scripture. The tares will be reading this and the wheat will be reading this. The Bible is addressing, in all cases, the “professing” Christians…this is a general principle that is, again, said in several places in the NT but, we are told that those who are following in the direction of the Spirit are the sons of God in Romans 8:14. Therefore, it can be said that those who are the true sons of God will walk in the Spirit. This is an evidence of true salvation and indwelling of the Spirit.

All of the scriptures that you bring forward can be explained in the context of scripture.
The point then is that true Christians will fulfill all of the requirements for salvation , faith and works? Besides 2 Peter 1:5-8 demonstrates that a Christian will not necessarily live righteously and may not even persevere in righteousness.

God bless,
Michael

Agreed. Plus, what I’ve learned from studying the Bible is that you can’t pick and choose a verse here and a verse there to make your points. All of scripture affects each other, in some way. Hence why we have such a large bible. 😉 God felt that this was all stuff that we, as Christians, needed to know. 👍
I just want to clarify something Mrs. Abbott, you are not Catholic, right? I was under the impression that you once were.

God Bless,
Michael

I am Catholic, yes. Not a very good one so that’s why I don’t claim to be one on my profile. One thing for sure is that I know I’m a Christian. 😉

I think it was made clear from scripture that only those who are elect can be justified. NEVER will you see this middle group called out in scripture.

Thank you for the clarification. Based on your last post on this thread, I thought you had become a Calvinist. 😛

Will all of the justified persevere to the end? What does persevering to the end mean?

AMEN SISTER!!!👍

CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT

Unfortunately, I find that too many people confuse theological context (i.e. Calvinist, Arminian, etc.) with Biblical context.

God Bless,
Michael
Yeah you are probably right but admit it that catholic put a catholic context on it too:(

IMHO it is hard to study the bible without some sort of pre-conceived notions.
I really try hard not to and I pray that the HS leads in the right direction and to date it is what I have talked about on the forums.
Trust me I have read the bible with my new catholic sunglasses on and, with prayer, have only seen blurry.😦
Of course after what I said above you know I said I cant be trusted:p But I really have tried to see things from a catholic viewpoint and in doing so have relaxed some of my harsh criticisms but nonetheless still do not believe in much of the theology.🤷

What you need to realize is that we have an infinite God writing to finite man and it seems like it creates a paradox of sorts. But, we can see God’s soverignty and man’s responsibility work together in scripture. This is what confuses people. It can be illustrated below and I have illustrated this before.

In Acts 27 - Paul is with a group of people with Paul are on a ship and in a storm…Paul makes this proclamation…

Ac 27:22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.
23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

This would parallel the favorite scriptures of the protestant!

The warnings are what Catholics like to point out - and here it comes in this passage…

30 And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,
31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

God said it would happen…YES…He ordained it. BUT, he had to ordain the means as well. We must love and we WILL love, We must persevere and we WILL persevere, We must obey and we WILL obey…there are scriptures for both. He has ordained the end of our salvation as well as the means!

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

All anyone can do is try. 🙂 That’s all God asks of us. Plus, we can all learn a thing or two from each other, irregardless of religious background. 👍

I agree Catholics are capable of doing that. If a Protestant can explain the “problematic” verses in a reasonable fashion, then I might actually believe what they’re saying. But when basic rules of logic, common sense, grammar and semantics are violated in order to make certain verses fit a particular theology, then I cannot accept it.

God Bless,
Michael

Doesn’t that usually happen when someone is just repeating something they’ve heard rather than truly believing it themselves? :o

That analogy would work if the elect encompassed all of the justified. What does persevering to the end mean? That is what I really want to know. BTW, are you related to Linkowski? Do you attend the same church? Both of you are eerily similar. It’s as if you and Linkowski were the same person?

God Bless,

Jesus promised to forgive my sins.
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Matthew 26:26-28
Angainor, this post does not say anything about Jesus promising to forgive your sins. It says that his flesh and his blood were poured out “for many” for the forgiveness of sins. What the OP is asking is how do you KNOW that you number among them?

Not letting our sins keep us away from God. 😉
That’s what a substitutionary sin-sacrifice is all about, Mrs. A (2 Cor. 5:21). God dealt with our sins, once for all, through the shedding of blood - that of His only Son.Heb. 9:26b "…but now once at the consumation He has been manifested to to put away sin (how?) by the sacrifice of Himself.

Heb. 10:12 “…but He, having offered one sacrifice for sin, for all time, sat down at the right hand of God”

Heb. 1:3b "When He had made purfication of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high"Salvation is not a sin issue, but a FAITH issue. Divine grace to the unbeliever is repugnant.

So your salvation is guaranteed, unless you do not persever in your faith?

Chuck
True faith endures as well as we are told that perseverance is not only a condition for ultimate salvation but is an evidence…

Heb 3:14 For we ***have become ***partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end,
