OK, right, but the bishop in Allentown still closed a whole bunch of churches in NE Pennsylvania, if you want to argue that, be my guest.
So? There are usually to many churches in one town anyway. To me you say “a whole bunch of churches” will you name them please? And exactly how many because they are only allowed one specific number, but I’ll tell you that after I receive your answer…😉

You have the absolute God given right to be distrustful of an evangelical. Just google Allentown or Scranton Archdiocese and feast on the good news yourself.

The truth is though, there are Catholics here protesting closures to the Vatican, lawsuits against the Bishop and in my county (Carbon County PA) the county tax acessor is trying to force the diocese to pay property taxes on closed church buildings, there are that many of them and they would get enough tax money to justify a court battle.

from the above article: On June 1st 2008, the Diocese of Allentown unveiled the first section of restructuring of parishes for the five counties. Due to the shift in population, waning number of priestly vocations, and other reasons, the Diocese closed 47 parishes effective reducing its parishes from 151 to 104. The Diocese plans to finish its efforts with restructuring over the **next year where 15 or more parishes **will be consolidated or merged.

Going by memory, even some of the consolidated parishes have less than 50 familys. But I’m sure you have some answer to totally discredit this news.

That is wonderful!! Also ironic. The last time I went to a Catholic bookstore, its shelves were littered with New Age and Protestant books.
So you consider nothing written by a non RC to be but “litter” ? It is hard to learn truth when you limit yourself to only one point of view.

Quite the reverse. Catholic parishes and dioceses are way too big to function effectively as local churches.

Edwin
Well for a church which is concerned that errors may creep into teaching, then fewer churches are needed to control the message given. If possible it could be like the Nation of Islam when the message is beamed in from Chicago on many weekends. That way the leadership can insure any local priest or representative doesn’t stray and the approved message is given.

The megachurch in itself is not “the Evangelical Church”. Most worship together with 50 or 100 fellow believers. However the megachurch gets media notice. How can it be avoided. Its campus may be one of the larger business in town. With parking attendents, daycare, armed security, etc. They get media attention because of the potential political power should their members vote as a bloc and the economic power as people spend much of their free time in fellowship. And they might as well hang with their brothers since the church provides services rather then get stuck in the parking lot traffic trying to make a quick escape to the mall.

Well, spiritmeadow, Marsha was right. The shelves are stocked according to the theology of the store manager. There really is a lot of garbage in some Catholic bookstores by Catholic authors. Lots of serious ERROR mixed in with the truth. … Actually, it seems more like new agey error is preferred TO the truth in some Catholic bookstores. 🤷

That’s why it’s so important that we,
Study to show ourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

And, actually we are to be so familiar with the word of truth that we would be able to recognize false teachings. The way to do that is to form our consciences WITH the word of truth, and not with other “points of view.” As Christians we need to be so familiar with the real thing that we would recognize a counterfeit right off.

So you think open-mindedness is a great thing in other folks but have no desire to see your own Church practice it?

Edwin
Open-mindedness? Are you kidding, I think they should bring back the stake.

There is truth and there is non-truth. There is no point looking for truth in books written by those who have rejected the fullness of truth in the One True Church.

And if you took that position as an adventist where would you be now? If we are unwilling to face a challenge what good are we?

I am a devout member of a mega church. The church is by no means a cotton candy vendor like Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church. -LH

So you are saying that “good” RC’s are those that function by inductive reasoning as opposed to deductive? Meaning that you determine the truth (listening to what the Magisterium tells you) and then judging everything by that standard. Thus anything different from the Magisterium is not truth? Deductive reasoning would be where you determine the truth based on a fair reading or learning of all that is available.

I would suggest that the inductive method simply re-inforces the “truth” presented without testing its efficacy in any way. Not the best way to arrive at truth, but I admit, quite a bit easier than the deductive method.

That is a good way to never see anything that might convince one one is wrong. I daresay society would still be operating in caves had we taken that approach generally. I find truth withstands untruth easily. But of course you can’t know untruth until you learn it and put it to the test. Avoidance, generally doesn’t solve much, but to put one at a disadvantage in the argument.

That is rather like saying that you can’t tell if water is poisoned until after you’ve drunk it and see if it kills you. When there is a sign by the lake that says, “Caution! Poison Do Not Drink!” I would suggest that you not drink it.

Just read a huge article from the Christian Science Monitor that Evangelicals will be gone within 10 years due to the fact they are too much into their Megachurches, and they don’t teach the truth from the Word of God.
I have but one question…why on earth would you be reading the Christian Science Monitor? As a Catholic Christian, I would not want anyone of faith or from heaven seeing me even looking at it…Are you into reading cult papers?

Actually, a friend saw it and told me to read it. I do not read anything other than the truths of the Catholic faith. And just because they truly are a cult, doesn’t make them any less a liar.

This impulse I see that you can’t read it unless it carries a Catholic label is scary. The CSM is recoginized as one of the great newspapers of the world by most.

For the record I doubt if she did read the CSM. This opinion piece was picked up by the Drudge Report and was the most linked to story on the net on the day of its release. More likely she saw an anti-Protestant headline and just ran with the story.
