You mean the Tiber river don’t you:)? Haven’t you guys heard, the Tiber is an incredibly polluted river. In fact in a study of which cities inhabitants used the most cocaine Rome topped the list. Scientists did the study by looking at the water in the Tiber (where their sewage treatments plants out-pour to).
This response is the most ridiculous one to date…must be some pretty dumb scientists…

Purely as an aside (not to derail the thread) the science he refers to is solid. Waste water treatment plants do not remove chemicals, only biologicals during treatment. In this country because of the number of women using the pill, there are very high estrogen levels in the water. Enough so, that some rivers have no male fish. This is another reason why breast cancer is increasing in women who have never used the pill nor hormone replacement therapy. Most drugs perscription drugs that are used are prescribed at a high enough dosage that the body eliminates a lot of the drug. Add to that the number of old prescriptions that are flushed down the toilet which also end up in the water supply. I had never thought about recreational drugs, but it stands to reason that they too would end up in the water.

Now, whether or not this is true of the Tiber, and whether or not hard studies have been on the water to measure cocaine use, I do not know, but the science is there to do such studies. Though, heaven knows that I would hate to agree with Humble on anything.

I have come across this information at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency where I work.

You might be humble in doubt now, but when you’re on your death bed you’ll be calling out to Jesus. Tell me I’m wrong.

yeah yeah … heard it all before. Believe in our religion or you’ll be sorry. Hey, every religion has their devil, their hell, their fear tactics, bla bla bla.

So, whatever … I won’t be psychology extorted to be a member of your church. I’m know it’s all nonsense, and whether or not a lifelong atheist appeals to higher power on his death bad is irrelevant to my point. He or she only does so because they’ve been psychologically programed to have faith throughout their life. If that logically validates your religion in your mind, then obviously you have little grasp of logic.

The real mystery is, what are you doing here? Psychology tells us that all behavior has meaning…😃

Maybe the Tiber IS polluted, but so aren’t a million other waters in the world…and what does the polluted Tiber have to do with religion? 🤷 especially the ridiculous assumption of cocaine use to pollute it… humble, you are desperate in your words…

I think you must have misunderstood that I care what you do for your salvation. My statement was for the people who are reading this who believe Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus is the one who tells of the consequences for people like you. My brother-in-law who has been a Baptist preacher for over over 45 years told me of many death bed confessions. He then told me something interesting. Nobody ever denied Jesus on their deathbed.

Well I don’t know where this thread has gone. Seems the only time people are concerned about threads getting off topic is when their dogma is being threatened. Anyway, concerning the topic…Seems like a rather uncharitible one, but I know a thunderous herd of evangelicals whose direction is anything toward extinction, and Roman Catholics are flocking to them. Somebody better sound the alarm before it’s too late!

not desperate … just joking around really. Obviously I know that a polluted river has nothing to do with religion (remember I’m not the one who believes in fairy tales of little angels flying around protecting or tempting me :D:D:D).

originally I was bored (on this several month business trip away from home). Now I’m just having fun (though still on my business trip & still sort of bored :p:p).

My big pet peeve about religion isn’t so much that people put their hope in fantasy; we all do that in different ways. It’s that this force of people stunt science, drag our elected officials to advocate bigoted and unnecessary policies, and that people really believe that some invisible force (which doesn’t exist) will save us or will prevent harm (or in the worse case this invisible force ultimately intends to destroy earth & perhaps we should help him). In other words what’s the impetus for us to help ourselves if we think we don’t need to (and some invisible divine force governs the universe)? It runs contrary to self-determination and enslaves people in an intellectual box.

as compelling and emotive as your story is … as I said the only reason why people appeal to this higher power on their death bed is because they’re programmed to do so (and they fear death and ceasing to exist). If a person never heard the name of Jesus of his or her life, they wouldn’t appeal to him on their bad (psychological fact).

So your argument has no basis in logic.

Yep.
You want to see how cool God is? I would bet this thread has more of the Truth of His Word than any thread on this entire forum. And He’s using an atheist to keep it on top. 🙂

Still the most popular thread on page one, 8360 views and counting.
God is Good!

*The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

What we want is the the unity for which Christ prayed. We don’t see this in the evangelical communities.

You are right, there is, indeed a thunderous herd of evangelicals. They are not a flock, following those whom Jesus placed in authority over them, but on a headlong stampede to do what seems right in theri own eyes.

Sadly, I must also agree that this movement is going toward anything but extinction. In fact, what we seem to see is a new spawn almost every day, dividing, separating, multiplying.

You are also correct that Roman Catholics are flocking into these errors, looking for doctrine that will tickle their ears. What type of alarm do you think might work?

Out of the 173 posts I’ve made on this thread, at least 90% were scripture. How many times did I give my personal interpretation of any scripture? Once.
If this is the case, always, then you are in the wrong place… what you are putting out here will be seen by educated Catholics as a “different gospel” than the one which was committed to us. As such, it must be rejected.

The thing I have noticed is the opposite. I see people from all different backgrounds finally finding what they have been searching for…finding it in the simple gospel. But I see a kind of legalistic narrowness in Catholics that doesn’t inspire the same liberty and joy. Have I just visited the wrong Catholic circles?

Yep.

How is that, do you think?

That’s great to hear! I see these recent polls - Europe is 17% Christian, but take away those that claim Christian by tradition only, and they are saying it’s more like 3%. In the US, 70% Christian, but of those, over 40% claim there’s more than one path to Salvation. It’s doesn’t paint a pretty picture, so it’s always great to hear there are still people searching and finding the simple gospel. 🙂

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”
~Romans 1:16

As everyone who has read here knows, I have no theological tradition.
Everyone here knows you are just fooling yourself. 😃

You are sure not fooling us!
Let’s face it, whatever book you read that influenced you to the extent to paint everything and everyone one you see into your tradition-in-a-box didn’t take someone like me into account. Sorry - fail.
There is no doubt that new and different heresies can emerge every day. I am sure it is possible for you to come up with something novel. However, so far, you have only recylced the old ones. 😃

What influenced me was a course in historical theology that actually required many books. I began to learn the history of how our theology developed, and how it diverged in the many directions that constitute modern "different’ gospels than what we received from the Apostles.

ten percent is plenty! A little leaven leavens the whole lump. Suppose only 10% of what the Apostles taught was their personal opinion, and not protected by infallibility?
Code:
That's a whole lot of scripture standing on it's own for it's common sense meaning without needing any help from me.:)
Scripture was never meant to 'stand alone". It was produced by the Church for the use of the Church. It is best understand from the context in which it was written, which is the Catholic Church.
