Evangelism during the Fortnight for Freedom

So, what does evangelizing in the “Fortnight for Freedom” look like? It officially starts this Friday, and obviously continues for 2 weeks. I thought I would be able to participate, but I don’t think my parish is planning on doing anything. I’ll talk to my priest soon about it though.

Anyways, I just thought that this would be a great opportunity to evangelize… because the vast majority of our Christian brothers are going to be on our side once they hear what we’re so upset about. So… just that exposure alone is going to be beneficial… imagine seeing a group of Christians holding public protest/ prayer and you agreed with their cause. I bet at least some people might have their curiosity peaked to research a little into Catholicism. Or maybe even some lapsed Catholics.

But, what specifically are y’all planning on doing during these 2 weeks? **

The USCCB describes the Fortnight For Freedom (which starts tomorrow, by the way – not Friday) as a “special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty.”

There is a list of the planned activitieshuge being undertaken by many dioceses. Check to see if your diocese has something planned.

It’s not too late to do something in your parish, even if it’s just a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration to pray for religious liberty.

But, what specifically are y’all planning on doing during these 2 weeks? **

Our diocese posted several events with a couple of good ones in my parish area. Personally for me it means not doing my usual stuff for the next two week in lieu of attending one of these other opportunities and inviting friends to join me.

Adoration hour is in there, a special mass, praying the suggested prayer at dinner, watching YouTube and other readily available clips on the topic, following news stories from various areas covering the topic, etc.

The USCCB site has several good articles available to help us find out what the real issue is (as opposed to what the secular media claims it’s about).

I think the biggest job in evangelization for now is to convince people who are not Catholic that it’s about them too. A non-catholic friend said, “I’d be more interested in all this religious freedom stuff if it wasn’t just about Catholics hating birth control.” It took some work to get her to see that there are Constitutional issues beyond “Catholics hating birth control.”

I don’t think the case is being made very well outside the Church and that is our job.
