I thought of something and I am wondering what other people think of this. We all have different gifts for leading others to Christ, and sometimes it seems that we don’t really look at how each of our gifts complement each others.
For example, I am a bit of the wall and sometimes unstable emotionally, but I have a very polemical mind, and I can come up with good arguments and explanations of various church teachings that someone who is more emotionally secure but not so into the intellectual questions might not think of. Each of us only has so much time to focus on so many things on our own. Also, I have a tendency to be a bit too silly and goofy, and while that might draw someone into the faith because they see how much I enjoy being a Catholic, to keep them interested they would need to meet people who are not so outrageous as I sometimes am.
Sometimes someone that I could spark an interest in the faith someone else couldn’t. But I might not be able to sustain that person in the faith after they check it out, whereas someone else could. But someone that no one else could sustain in the faith but that they could draw them in I could. For example I am very compassionate to people who struggle with mental and neurological issues or people with autism for example because I have a form of autism called Asperger’s Syndrome. I have a great love for people who have either disabilities or handicaps, and I always try to go out of my way to keep them company if they are alone or have no one to talk to. I can understand what they are going through, and I can see how great they are because I know that I once felt like a nobody when my difficulties first manifested themselves. I know how great these people can be, all of them. People with Down’s Syndrome and severe mental retardation can become great saints just like any of the great saints of the Catholic Church. I anticipate there will be a lot of saints from this generation canonized in the future who had things like Down’s Syndrome or MR or other things. I am someone who can see the genius in these people. Most people who think they are normal intelligence really don’t know what they are talking about, while people who supposedly are stupid sometimes have more insight than any Psychology Ph.D. We all are asleep to other people’s souls sometimes. We focus on the confusion of our senses and we don’t know how to interpret the true personhood of another. I suspect that people who have relatives who suffer from Alzheimer’s might be able to relate to what I say here, perhaps especially with someone who was very sharp, and very real. Who was just a very prescient person, who could just see reality for what it is, and you could tell, and they knew you knew, and you knew they knew. And when you see a loved one slipping into Alzheimer’s who was like that to you. And there are those moments where they are real again, they are there with you, and you look into their eyes, and you can see that they know you know, and you know they know, And you glimpse into each others soul, and the look you give to each other says “This is love, and I love you, and we know each other for real, not smoke and mirrors, not shadows, not through glass darkly, not in part, but face to face” And that give us a glimpse of what it will be like to see God face to face in Heaven.
