Every late summer and fall I attend a number of Protestant bible studies to evangelize

Tonight I’ll attend mars hill in Seattle I have been waiting for this one for years so I could be properly prepared. And on Wednesday I’ll be attending a fundameltalist Baptsit church. My plan for this fall is to seek out fundemantist preachers who are fallen away Catholics. Which both of these men are. Please pray for me and below leave any advise.

I am very well equipped with catholic teachings and understand scripture well and can quote versus if needed.

My experice has been mixed once I was spit at and said “here’s your holy water”. But there is always Someone really interested in the churh

May Our Lord bless you and may He guide you and those you meet ever closer to Him. Amen.

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. 11Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. 12For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. 13Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. 14So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, 15and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. 16In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. 17And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones 19and also for me, that speech may be given me to open my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel 20for which I am an ambassador in chains, so that I may have the courage to speak as I must.

Peace

When the Protestant bible studies welcome you to attend, do they welcome you to come and refute their program? Do they know the reason you want to attend? Are you honest with the group as to your reason at their program?

Are you seeking out these fallen away Catholics who are now Protestant preachers on a personal, private, individual basis? Or are your seeking them out in a public place where they are meeting with their church members?

Be careful and tactful.

May god give you protection and wisdom to know what to say at the right moments.

These would be my questions as well.

I sure wouldn’t want a Protestant coming to my parish Bible study with the sole purpose of setting us straight.

But if you can manage to do this is a respectful and charitable way, then more power to you. 🤷

I was wondering the same thing.

Treat others like you want to be treated. If you wouldn’t want some random person showing up to a Catholic bible study telling everyone there they are wrong, then you shouldn’t do it to them. I think this should be a personal conversation, not out in public where it could be embarrassing and do more harm than good.

Be sure to read the catholicdefense.blogspot.com blog where Joe rakes Driscol over the coals for his ****** book on the Bible canon!

I’d tend to agree that this would be a very risky idea as it may push people away rather than help. Having said that I think it depends on your gifts and talents: if you are not only knowledgable and capable enough of a debater to make concrete and effective arguments in the moment defending the Catholic view, but also are able to do so with tons of charm, friendliness, love, and without getting angry or impatient, then maybe you’ve got something.

This I think would be a horrible idea for me, I’d get angry or overly argumentative too fast. I’m a philosopher too so I tend to be able to make super strong arguments and thrive on endless back and forth arguing, but most people can’t stay on topic and get emotional, then start engaging in shouting or just shutting down intellectually, which is when I’d get angry and/or refuse to nicely drop the subject. I keep going for the jugular with reason and argument, and usually people who won’t see reason or agree just get defensive and upset which ends up making things worse in the end.

You recognize what St. Peter says:

(1 Peter 3:15-16)

Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence.

Don’t mind the negativity, go with the Lord, to bring back the sheep that have strayed, its like the fig tree that did not yield any fruit, what did the Lord do, he cut it down, there is no point in these fallen Catholics believing in non Catholic doctrine, and staying in there stench, not believing in the Eucharist, believing its bread and grape juice, they should know better, the Devil has led them astray I will dedicate my Hour to morrow Wednesday in front of the Blessed Sacrament for your success, you remind me of John the Baptist - Make straight the Way of the Lord.:signofcross:

Hey bro,
I participated in a bible study with protestants I grew up with. It was lead by pastor Mark Driscol fro Mars Hill. He is very “hip” and “cool”.

He is part of the new movement who likes to use the term “religion” in a solely negative way. Treating it as our attempts to earn God’s favor through rituals and works (outside of faith). He says, “we dont need to try harder”

He also believes the Eucharist to be a “canabolistic” act. He says, “we eat bread and wine to remind us what Jesus did.”

He is Calvanist.

Research Calvin and let them hear some of the stuff he taught.

The group went well. I shared some differences with Catholic teaching. Others were not to interested. I usually try to focus on the similarities and foundation of the gospels which do give us a common communion. But some things demand a defense.

God bless your fellowship, and speak from your heart…to other’s hearts. Listen for the genuine Spirit in others when they share. Express your love for that same Spirit.

Michael

I identify that I’m roman catholic if asked
I mainly listen
I find the group will ussally skip versus that are difficult for them when they do I’ll just say what about that verse. That means — blank to te catholic church
I find at that someone always is really interested in the church in an honest way and at the end of the bible study they approach me and I answer thier questions one on one

Tonight
A nieghbor asked me to watch videos about thier church which is the mega church mars hill. I did and I’m going to thier bible study

Wednesday
A stranger gave me a book called Done she was a fundementalist pastors wife when they saw the rosary in my car I read the entire thing and am returning it full of notes based on catholic interpitation of scripture to the pastor, he invited me to the bible study.

For your info
Mark Driscoll grew up in a very nice catholic home with five siblings. His father was a very hard worker; I think a carpenter or plumber.
Mark got his girlfriend pregnant at 19, his wife Grace. Her father was a fundamentalist preacher who showed mark the ropes on how to start a church and turn it into a business.

I know this because I know a lot of people who go to mars hill because I run in hipster circles since I live at a ski area and surf at the ocean alot.

This is my take on it but going out there and evangelizing so militantly sounds rather obnoxious… And coming from me (I’ve spent most of the post decade as a door to door vacuum salesman) thats bad 😉 I appreciate your zeal and what I’m sure are heartfelt intentions. I do however, think you’re onto something.

When I first moved to this town the first friend I made was a born again ex Catholic and I went to his Bible study for almost a year. During that time I made some cool connections with people and shed some light on some misunderstandings. I think the most valuable thing I accomplished was showing them I’m a nice guy and an orthodox Catholic and I think a little glimpse of the romantic beauty of our faith. One night after a discussion on John’s gospel the guys even decided to enjoy a little bread and wine at the next meeting, strictly symbolically of course. Nobody turned Catholic and probably nobody will but we all grew in our faith and closer to God and maybe a seed was planted.

My point I was going to make before I started rambling is that the person should be the end and the evangelizing ought to be the means. When the evangelizing becomes the end and the person the means we’re on the wrong track. Before I became religious myself it was this type of religiosity that really turned me off so maybe I’m projecting. That’s my two cents. Good luck and God bless!

I don’t know anything about Mars Hill or Mark Driscoll, nor do I have an interest.

However, what is the purpose of discussing that Mark and Grace conceived a child before marriage? I found that statement offensive in sharing something that is not needed for this thread.

Go to it, you will do a lot of good in ways you may not even know. If you have goodwill then that will show them you are good. I’m all for you and you only grow if you give it a try. Then if mistakes are made, those too can teach much.

You might want to wear one of Mary’s medals or scapulars as well. For she is gentle and kind and will help you.

May God bless and keep you. May God’s face shine on you. May God be kind to you and give you peace.

I am of the Opinion that God ought to beproviding the opportunities for evangualization.🙂

Further, I KNOW that ONLY God can “convert”

Please do NOT argue; discuss if they are open to it.

If they’re not open to listening, I don’t think it will work. Years ago, if a Catholic evangelized to me, I would have turned them down flat. Now I’d probably be more willing to listen or have a discussion.

Well said.

As a non-Catholic, I would never even think of going to a Catholic study group with the intention of “evangelizing” and disputing with my host. It’s just plain rude. Yuck. What a turn off for any Catholic to think it’s okay for them to do what they would complain about if it were done to them. The end doesn’t justify the means, folks.

Adamski, make an appointment to speak with Mark Driscoll one-on-one.
