There’s this guy at my Catholic university who attends the Evangelical Lutheran Church who is openly gay and is okay with (and even in the past has been) promiscuous. He looks at other males on campus lustfully. Thankfully, they don’t see him or else he could get beaten up by them.
He is definitley anti-Catholic in the things that he says. One example of how anti-Catholic he is was when one of his Catholic friends went in to the student chapel and he said that he refused to go in there because he knew about the Catholic mythology beliefs of Catholics in regards to altars. (There is one in the chapel and adoration is available.)
He related how when he was near a Catholic altar once that a Catholic got very upset. I don’t know if he was doing something offensive at the altar or what. He’s been very much affected by that experience. I assured him that how that person handled the situation was inappropriate, but he was still vehemently against going in there like he was both angry and scared. His denomination celebrates with a liturgy on sundays and he believes in consumbstantiation.
Ironically he is a theology major here and complains about the Catholic vocabulary words used and how he doesn’t know the basics of Catholicism. I haven’t said it aloud because I don’t want to sound rude, but it is a Catholic university and that the theology major here presumes that you already know the basics and are moving on to study Catholicism on a deeper level. I asked him why he is even a theology major at a Catholic school and he said that it was either this school or the Baptist university not that far from us. He commutes from another town living with his parents. I still find it odd that he would study theology here though. Isn’t there some Evangelical Lutheran school where he could have gone to? He is also double majoring in psychology. He gets Cs in his theology classes here. He is a junior.
He wants to join the theological honor society (TAK) that is being brought back after years of being dead and he appears to be the only one in it who is not Catholic. I was appointed the president and I’m concerned about how our club will be considering the vastly different beliefs he has. He says that he wants to do service projects and complains about certain students who want to be apart of it who want to go to shrines as a club. This guy is really getting on my nerves and is making me uncomfortable. On top of that, not that many people are Catholic at this school and some of those who are are very triumphalistic in their approach with non-Catholics. (They seem to be very argumentative and defensive about being Catholic. I call it the Council of Trent approach. “Protestants are wrong and this is why…!”) These students have been known to turn their fellow Catholics and non-Catholics off from Catholicism on campus. These guys want to be apart of TAK too. Oh my, this may not be pretty!
I wonder if working with him is basically throwing pearls before swine.
