i understand that Catholics are allowed to believe in Evolution in part and that we can believe that man evolved but in accordance with the Creator’s plan. Now if we assume man was nearly ape like and evolved to a human being with God implanting in him an immortal soul do we still believe that Eve(woman) was taken from the rib of Man?

I believe that would be taken as symbolism showing the relationship between man and wife. I suppose that it could be taken literally for evolutionists as well where Adam was born of another ape and God pulled Eve from his side.

thanks.Im 61 and i don’t think ive ever heard a priest or anyone else tell me it was symbolism.I thought that it must be but your the first to confirm that it could be.

Either a priest or I heard on EWTN that both sexes have the same amount or ribs, so this may be symbolism.

The Bible is rich in symbolism, especially the Old Testament and the Book of Revelations. We can’t take every word literally. This symbolism is written for us to understand in the most simplest of forms the great mysteries of God. It is sort of like teaching a child to read, you don’t start out with a novel but with a picture book containing a few simple words.

“Woman” as a concept and a gender naturally is present in mammals and many (most? all?) other vertebrates. As Catholics, however, we are (at the very least) permitted to believe that Eve was formed from a rib from Adam. As I recall, we are also required to believe that the human race had only 2 originating members, and that they did not interbreed with non-humans in procreating the human race.

Even if Eve was taken from Adam’s rib, that wouldn’t change the skeletal design of subsequent humans, of course. You’d need to find Adam’s bones with or without the missing rib to determine the veracity of the account. And they probably aren’t there to be found any more.

We are indeed required to believe in 2 original humans. But where is the line between human and nonhuman, anyway? Was H. erectus human? H. Habilis? Can such a line be drawn in the fossil past?

Science has already proven that the human race originated from 2 human beings from DNA. So, I suppose before these humans were created, there probably were apes! In a way Genesis doesn’t contradict that as Adam was allowed to name all of the animals and maybe plants that were created by God.

I think that the “rib” may just be symbolic, or if not God was the first anesthesiologist, as he put Adam in a “deep sleep”.

I choose to believe that there was an Adam and Eve regardless and of course Mary was the “second Eve” so if progressive theologians don’t believe in Adam and Eve they must also deny that fact.

That about sums up my thoughts on it. I’m pretty sure that we’re permitted to go either way.

(Though not all vertebrates, there’s a breed of small venomous snake which is entirely hermaphroditic).

And some fishes can even change their gender in response to biological conditions.

Good question! Unfortunately, anthropology is not my field (except where it intersects with linguistics…👍)
