Evening Prayer I/Saturday? (Liturgy of the Hours)

Hello!
I am getting started on praying the Liturgy of the Hours, and so far I’ve been quite dependent upon the St. Joseph’s Guide for navigating my breviary. I’ve noticed as I’ve been praying the Liturgy of the Hours that there is a morning prayer for Saturday, but on Saturday night we just skip right to Evening Prayer I for Sunday. Does this always happen, i.e., is Saturday’s Evening Prayer always considered Sunday’s EP1? If so, why?

The liturgical celebrations of Sundays and Solemnities begin at Evening Prayer on the previous night. Evening Prayer I of Sunday is effectively Saturday Evening Prayer, but it is considered part of the Sunday celebration (similarly to how Saturday evening masses tend to be the Mass of Sunday).

It goes back to the biblical understanding of the calendar. In the Jewish and early Christian, and still kept among Eastern Christian, usage, the transition from one day to the next was/is at sunset.

As for the Liturgy of the Hours, it happens on Solemnities, and all Sundays are Solemnities. Therefore you’ll find the same pattern on other major feast days such as Christmas, Immaculate Conception, Sts Peter & Paul, etc.
 
The only exception to this rule on which Saturday has an Evening Prayer of its own is Holy Saturday. Easter Sunday has no Evening Prayer I

When the calendar reform occurred the office was reorganized from the older practice to this:
  • Office of Readings (now may be said at other times than early morning)
  • Lauds (Morning Prayer)
  • Little Hours: Terce (mid-morning), Sext (midday) and None (afternoon)
  • Vespers (Evening Prayer)
  • Compline (Night Prayer)
  1. Solemnities have an evening prayer I on the preceding day.
