Christ in the heart of the Russian GULAG: The Catholic Church’s presence in Far Eastern Russia

Tuesday July 16, 2013 7:00 pm at Our Lady of Fatima Russian Byzantine Catholic Church, 5920 Geary Blvd., San Francisco

Fr. Michael Shields, pastor of the Roman Catholic Parish of the Nativity in the city of Magadan, Russia, will speak on the founding of the Catholic Church in a part of Russia which has known well the horror of the Russian Communist GULAG and its aftermath.

Come and learn about the challenges faced by Fr. Michael and others during his 20 year ministry there. Be amazed at the difference the love of Christ makes in the lives of many living in “this place of the concentration camps.”

I’m thinking about making the trek, if I can get my husband to agree to keep the kids.

I’m not optomistic, tho we did put out a request to anyone who might have a recorder to bring it. I will try to tape a few minutes on my phone. If Ted is coming he can record a bit on his phone, too.

So far we’ve only managed to get snippets of Liturgy up on our Youtube, but it’s a goal to get more up there. This evening with Fr Michael came together so quickly, which is a blessing, but gave us little time to spread the word locally, or to scramble with something like recording. Thank you for asking. It’s helps remind us where we need to be heading.

Guess what-- Fr Michael will be at Holy Trinity in El Dorado this weekend. So maybe you can connect with him there. He will preach at all the Masses July 20 & 21. See page 6 of their weekly bulletin.

It was a wonderful evening! I can’t tell you what a joy it was having Fr Michael with us. Fr David Anderson came down from Ukiah, too, which was a real treat.
