I just watched this movie on Netflix. In my opinion, it contains one of the most terrifying and realistic depictions of hell I have ever seen. Trust me, I don’t scare easily. I watched “The Conjuring” and it didn’t bother me at all.

However, with Event Horizon, I had trouble sleeping for a week. I was wondering if anyone has seen it.

isn’t that when they find hell in an actual place in space? I don’t remember it scaring me perhaps because of that. I found The Conjuring much creeper—at least until the Hollywood ending. :o

Yes, that’s the one. It has Laurence Fishburne (from the Matrix) and Sam Neil. I suppose The Conjuring did creep me out a little bit - when I was watching it. But Event Horizon disturbed my sleep. That hasn’t happened to me since I was a kid.

If I remember correctly, Hell is depicted as an alternate dimension existing outside our known universe. During one scene, you actually see what’s going on in that alternate dimension, and it’s really, really disturbing.

You didn’t find it scary at all??
 
Yep, I saw that one. I still think it’s one of the scarier movies I’ve seen. Basically, the ship has a device that can bend the space-time continuum and travel to any point in space in an instant - gets lost for years and is found orbiting Neptune some time later. The ship went to Hell and brought it back with it.

Scary stuff!

That’s funny what was said about The Conjuring. I thought that movie was very scary until the cornball ending ruined it.

I don’t remember well enough but I’m sure there was some disturbing imagery. I remember some claustrophobic parts. Some movies strike different people. I think The Exorcism of Emily Rose struck me for the first time in a while back when that came out. It was well done but had disturbing parts. I’ll probablywatch it again someday
 
It’s only scary if you end up there. What I worry about is looking at a beautiful woman and daydreaming a bit. It seems like according to Matthew 5:28 that is the same as the mortal sin of adultery which will send you to eternal damnation in hell.

Funny you mentioned that Bible passage. After watching Even Horizon, I kept thinking Matthew 7:13-14:

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

I’m not saying this is a good movie, but it does kind of put the “fear of God” into you.
 
I saw it when it released, which was quite some years ago.

I thought the premise of an entrance to Hell in the orbit of Neptune was rather hokey, but at least it got viewers to thinking about it.

Watched it this evening and was pretty disappointed.

The only movie mentioned in the other scary movie thread that I’ve enjoyed (but hadn’t seen before) was Innkeepers. Not a great movie but a little different, and entertaining enough.
 
Interesting discussion. I used to regularly refer to “Event Horizon” as “one of the most ‘evil’ movies I have seen”. Perhaps I was too harsh in my assessment. I only saw it once, on its opening weekend in theaters back in 1997.

I will say that the very last scene freaked me out a bit and I can still visualize it, all these years later. :eek:
 
Of all the movies in that other thread the scariest one is Grave Encounters. It’s pretty messed up. If Event Horizon scared you don’t watch that one.
 
I don’t watch scarey movies anymore. Life is scarey enough but I thought the vision of Hell in Constantine with Keonaue Reeves was what hell must be like.
 
I remember watching Event Horizon when I was still in High School. Scary as Hell.
There are very few horror movies that genuinely scare me (Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street had little or no effect). But I couldn’t sleep after watching this.

It’s a refreshing departure from the “Oh no! don’t go in there! The killer’s waiting for you!!!” brand of horror movie that has sadly become too common these days.

I heard there is an unrated cut available. I don’t suppose Netflix makes that available?
