Ever Been Protested by Westboro Baptist Church?

Westboro Baptist Church is going to be protesting outside our church this coming Sunday during our AM masses. They will also be protesting another Catholic Church, along with Episcopal, ELCA, Evangelical Free, and Baptist Churches. This is because a high school in our area will be performing the play the “Laramie Project”.

If you are not familiar with them, they are an anti-homosexual hate group headed by Fred Phelps who protests at the funerals of dead soldiers and the funerals of the murdered Amish girls.

Our priest is encouraging us to not to engage them in any way whatsoever, however us Knights of Columbus members are planning to park our cars around where they will be protesting on Saturday night so none of our parishioners will be forced to park next to them. The business behind our church has also agreed to let us use their parking lot. We just want to keep away from them for our children’s sake and to avoid lawsuits, which is how they fund themselves.

THe ELCA Church across the street is planning to bring them breakfast. I’m not too sure that’s a good idea, but I could be wrong.

I was just wondering if any of you have witnessed one of these protests and if anything happened.
 
They protest here in Topeka almost every week they are not out specifically protesting anyone else. Usually they stand there, hold their offensive signs, and sometimes sing or shout. They are pretty easy to ignore, do not worry about it too much.

This summer I protested them. I came with signs that said “GOD IS LOVE, NOT HATE” and “Now what did Jesus say about throwing stones?”

They were really surprised to see me show up. 👍

I simply smiled. The funny thing is that they normally have more young people than adults. It’s very sad to see these young people being handed such distorted views of God’s nature.

Also, is the Laramie Project inline with Church teaching? If not, I don’t have too much sympathy for the Phelp’s gang showing up.

I saw a video on youtube of people protesting them on *their *street. One guy was holding a sign that I couldn’t agree with. It said: American by birth. Homosexual by the grace of God.

I’d change that to say:
American By Birth.
Catholic By The Grace Of God!!

It is a grace to have Same Sex Attraction. It’s simply not the grace they think. It is a call to radical holiness, and with that comes much suffering and self-denial.

There is much grace to be found there. Unfortunately, I doubt many find it.

What is the “Laramie Project” that the OP was talking about?

I think that this would be the perfect time to unvail the new church sign…[SIGN]Bible Christian Catholic Church[/SIGN] 😉

Lol. I don’t think even *they *are that brave. They don’t call us the fighting Irish for nothing…

Anyone who would protest them in return deserves the best steak my grill has to offer. The invitation stands if you’re ever up this way.

Oh, lol. Well, I’m not sure but I’ll keep that in mind! I’m not one to turn down free food! 😃
 
They came to my town of Hinesville, GA, to protest the funeral of a soldier from my Division. I was still in Iraq at the time, so I was spared having to witness the protest. I just don’t understand these people. Let us all say a prayer for them. 👍

The Laramie Project is a play by Moses Kaufman and the Techtonic (sp?) Theater Project. The playwright and actors went to Laramie Wyoming, where Matthew Shepheard was murdered. They performed hundreds of interviews of people in the town, and compiled the interviews into a play, where they enact themselves and the people that they interviewed. I saw the play at my college, where we performed the play.

According to the WBC website the play is just a big push for the homosexual agenda and a ploy for gays to gain sympathy and receive a “protected” status. They claim that Matthew Shepherd was killed because of a drug deal gone bad, not because he was gay, and that his mother is exploiting his death as a way to make money. Like most of these things in life, the truth probably lies somewhere in between.
 
In my two year sojourn in Topeka KS (1994-1996) It was a rare week I didn’t see a WBC protest. This was also during my mainstream Protestant phase of my journey back to the CC, and I was proud of my minister (who’s name I forget :o ) of Westminster Presbyterian INVITING a picket by declaring from the pulpit, that Fred Phelps “is a mean-spirited, hateful bigot!”

They protested at a Serviceman’s funeral here in Hudson, WI a while back. The signs are fairly large, but corvidae has pretty well discribed what happens.
 
They were supposed to show up at a funeral for a Nevada fallen soldier, but did not show up. Guess they must be afraid of the Wild, Wild West!

Last December they protested my parish. They also protested a bunch of other churches in my area, including Baptist churches. I have no clue why they were protesting us.
 
Well, i’ve read some of the stuff from them. Pretty much, they feel that they are the only ones in the US (probably planet) that truely understand the faith and that every other denom (especially catholics) have gone into apostacy. In otherwords, they are the only ones that are saved… Also, they are more like a cult than a church. (Compound and everything).

Personally, when i see someONE protesting so much about a single issue (normally gay) i want to say “My friend, Dost thou protest too much?”

Anyway… they are beyond extremists…
