I began freshman year of high school at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, in 1990. At the time, juniors and seniors went on something called–if I remember correctly–a KAIROS retreat. Our family moved out of the area in early 1993, a bit more than halfway through my junior year; I graduated from a public high school. I never got to go on this KAIROS retreat, and the people who had gone were very hush-hush about the whole thing. They would simply smile and say “I’m not going to tell you. You’ll just have to go yourself.”

Does anyone here have any idea about this? To this day I kind of wonder if I missed something special.

I grew up in the Episcopal Church and they had something called Kairos that was a Prison Ministry. Since I have been Catholic for almost 11 years, I have not heard of it nor do I recall seeing it mentioned in the bulletin.

My son went on one this year which is his senior year in high school. I think there were some speakers on various topics related to the faith and I believe some small group discussion. I don’t know the paticulars but it was a **very **good experience for him.

I would say by all means GO if you have the chance.

from what I understand in the Episcopal Church, it’s a Cursillo in a prison setting.

SIL and others in the family have attended a Jesuit high school and they have a Kairos retreat in their senior year, at a Jesuit retreat house, based on the Spiritual Exercise of St. Ignatius. This retreat seems to center on making life decisions, choosing career, college major, vocations, etc. with a view of putting God and service to the Church in top priority. can’t speak of other retreats that may have the same name. also can’t say for sure if that is the spelling, but it sounds right.

I go to a Jesuit high school in Chicago, and have gone on and led a Kairos retreat. They differ from school to school, but almost all are based around reflections on talks given by leaders. The experience is very powerful, but as a leader, I always have to remind retreatants to keep the church in the picture. It can become somewhat secularly sentimentalized if misled.

On the whole tho, I love it. 😃

The Kairos retreat is AWESOME.

i went last year, and it was a fantastic experience, seriously there are no words to describe it, it was awesome.
the ‘hush hush’ is because the retreat has many surprises and to give them away woudl ruin prolly the whole retreat.

im applying to be a leader for a kairos retreat this year actually, im excited. yay!
