I don’t even know if this is in the right forum, but:

Have you ever heard of putting one little drop of Holy Water into your bath each time you bathe? I just tried it out and I feel cleaner than ever! And re-newed. I don’t know much about where it came from, but my post-Vatican II great-grandmother taught me about it! She says it helps her old bones. Just wondering if anyone else heard about it.

I’ll have to try it! And no, I haven’t heard of this tradition before.

No… but I think it is a great idea. I prefer to take showers. When I take a shower I pray to God to bless the shower water to wash any negative things off my body. I always feel great when I do that.

I truly believe in using holy water as much as possible. I always carry it with me when I travel so I can use the holy water to bless my hotel room of any negativity. I also wear my rosary to sleep when I travel.
Whenever I go on a long car ride I say a prayer and I bless myself and my dog with holy water. My dog is used to being blessed as I say a prayer to keep her safe and I use the holy water to bless her.

I sometimes use holy water to spray my bed before going to bed.
I also bless my grandson and I tell him it will bring him happy dreams. I remember the first time I blessed him with holy water I heard him laughing in his dreams. He truly believes.

I have a friend who believes in using holy water on an injury. She said to make the sign of the cross on the injury. I do that also.

I also use regular water to clean and refresh myself of any sad thought in my brain. It feels good to splash myself with water when I don’t feel good. I used to run to the bathroom at work to splash myself with regular water when I would get upset or just needed to refresh myself. I am now retired.

Does anybody else have an interesting way of using holy water?

no I never heard of this but use of holy water for any other purpose than for blessing, seems superstitious to me.

well it works for me! 👍 there are all kinds of superstitious things in our Church.

I think i’ll try that for myself and my little ones. 😉 I know that in the Eastern Church, it is customary for many of the faithful to drink a little holy water every day, or if they feel particularly in need of more spiritual support. Especially after the blessing of the waters at Theophany, any holy water remaining from the previous year is usually used in cooking.

No I haven’t. I think I prefer to use a dab of holy water to bless myself - sign of the Cross on my forehead. Of course, one container is by my bed. I use it often, and when I can’t get to sleep. When the latter happens, it is usually because of spiritual “junk” I have been exposed to somewhere away from home - people or places that carry spiritual baggage that’s not good!

We sometimes forget that as we progress spiritually, we will be more sensitive to, and more bothered by, evil. So keep the holy water handy!

I’d never heard of using it in the bath. But I keep a bottle near my bedside and use it to sign myself sometimes when making Sign of the Cross or to sprinkle around the room. I have heard people who dab some in their children’s underwear (I don’t know why?)

This sounds rather strange and, if I may, irreverant use of Holy Water.

My children and I drink it (we bring home a quart jar from Church on Theophany) and I occasionally use it in cooking, or to wash down an aspirin. I don’t think I personally would feel right about putting it my bath, though, but that’s just me.

I use holy water to protect me from evil. Padre Pio was well known to use holy water to keep evil away from him. He was tormented by demons a lot for some reason.

I have his statue in my bedroom to protect me from evil. I always ask him to keep me safe. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

I also keep holy water by my bedside.

Wouldn’t this dilute the Holy Water? I read some rules regarding adding water to holy water; I think 55% blessed to 45% regular and you could do this once not indefinatly. Especially in light of that I don’t think a drop would cut it.

Are you serious or being flippant? I agree there are all kinds of superstitious things that seem like they are a part of the Church but are not. Sacramentals used properly are not superstitious.

I’d like to think it would be like bathing in Holy Water (especially with the way you and your grandmother describe it!) but I don’t think it is.

Please explain how it is irreverent. Don’t people bathe in the well at Lourds. Isn’t that water holy because the Virgin made it?

No, I have never heard of that, but it is something to think about. I also just recently learned about drinking exorcised/holy water-even though I have thought about it for a while. So, I personally am going to see how I can have some water and oil, maybe a little salt, too, blessed and drink it or use it for cooking. I don’t think this is superstitious at all. It is using the sacramentals to draw us closer to the Lord and guard us from the negative one and his minions…

I think it is important to not slip into superstitious practices, and while I don’t know what the actual rules are, I think we should remember it is “Holy” water and treat it as such.🤷

it is said that even the righteous will be swayed. in truth, Holy water is an instrument of incredible power. however, for genuine effectiveness it should be used in accordance with the church. otherwise it is just water, a placebo.

it is a gift from God.

Bruised Reed is right. Holy water ceases to be holy water when diluted by more than you have. In other words, if you have 1 cup of holy water you can’t add more than that and have it still be holy water. You could only add less than 1 cup. I’ve had a few priest friends tell me this. I wasn’t aware you could dilute it all before that. 👍

A.) how is it superstitous?
B.) how is it irrevernt?
