Ever heard the story of Allegri's "Miserere Mei Deus"?

The song Miserere Mei Deus by Allegri has a long story which is so intriguing that I originally thought it was a joke. It was so phenomenal that a Pope once excommunicated anyone who distributed it, so that it would only ever be played at the Vatican. Does anyone know if the excommunication was ever lifted?
