Ever Just Get Tired Of Debating Topics Here?

It does get tiring but in the past I’ve spent time in other boards where people are not as friendly towards Catholicism. Its one thing to disagree with your brothers and sisters, its another to fight with total strangers. One board I was on was just endless proselytizing to the point that it was petty arguments. At least here there’s a lot of intellectual barbs mixed in with the pettiness of some. But in the other boards I have been on, it was just free-for-all mayhem. Its funny sometimes to watch the anti-Catholics band together when they have nothing in common except contempt for the Catholic Church. You have a non-denom, a Muslim, and a Restorationist banding together to bash the Catholic Church. Its like a dog, a cat, an a mouse forming a team. And you don’t really learn anything there except on new ways to insult people. It wasn’t healthy. At least here the debates do have some merit most of the time and as stressful as it gets, you do get to learn something.

I’m fairly new to this site, but I find that if one has been to one internet chat board, they’ve pretty much been to them all. And, I’ve been to lots.

My sincerest hope is that people who are really seeking answers do not use this site as a source.

Much of the information that is being given out here is in error. People just say whatever they think, and it is usually wrong. There really hasn’t been very much teaching going on in the Church, real formation, real hard core catechesis, for a loooonnnnggg time.

But also, I believe there is a genuine element of evil both online and in the Church. There really are people whose sole aim is to misinform, confuse, agitate, invalidate what is true. The internet is really rife with that.

The internet, including this site, attracts people who hide behind the anonymity and only seem to want to provoke. So, if you sincerely want to know about Christ and the Catholic Church, go to someplace that you can trust. Someplace that has credibility. THIS IS NOT IT.

Actually, my sincerest hope is that people who are seeking answers use this site. They can either go to “Ask an Apologist” or go to Catholic Answers website and read the articles there.

Also with some familiarity you will get to know the people who give good and accurate answers here. I always look to JREducation for all things Roman Catholic and Franciscan, and to Alexander Roman for all things Eastern. There are many regulars too who give great and accurate answers such as FrDavid in the Liturgy and Sacraments forum.

Being a forum, you have the same mix of people here as in the real world. When one goes foruming, one should understand that is to be the case. Unless its a highly regulated forum where only certified experts can answer, you’ll always get a mix of answers no matter which forum it is, no matter what topic.

“Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.”

That is why it is good to always be aware. But my question is, if this is not a place of credibility (and I agree to a point, with some of the posts) and if, “There really hasn’t been very much teaching going on in the Church, real formation, real hard core catechesis, for a loooonnnnggg time.”, then what or whom should I trust? Just asking.

Actually this is kind of off the OP. Sorry.

I whole heartedly agree with this.

They were very visually oriented. ??? what? This is actually laughable.
You are proclaiming that certain saints are good because they are visually oriented???You just have to be kidding. Only the visually oriented are great models for us today???

Did anyone tell Jesus? Wonder if the Holy Spirit was being “visually oriented” when he inspired the Bible.
Doesn’t matter. THIS GENERATION ISN’T ORIENTED TOWARD WORDS…ALAS…

They are great models for us today, because we live in a world where a whole generation is visual. It’s not a generation that is oriented toward words, but toward images. We can avoid arguments if we learn to paint pictures with our words.

SaintGobban,

I would strongly suggest you show respect to the clergy and religious in this forum. The moderators do not take kindly to it. Not a threat. A kind warning. 🙂
This a an internet message board.

As such, anyone can claim to have any background, credentials, titles, degrees, etc. etc. that one wishes, and that information is completely unverifiable and highly suspect…

So that means, in most people’s rational minds, there are no clergy or religious in an internet website/chatroom/message board.

There are merely people who lay claim to superior knowledge or respect.

There may be religious people hanging out on the internet all day, but I very seriously doubt it.

In any case, my title is Saint, so I guess that trumps Fr. Br. Sister, Deacon, or whatever other computer chat name someone here comes up with.,

StTommy ALWAYS seems to have at least one sidekick, last thread it was Sirach2, who jumps in a minute or two after his post and co-signs. This thread it’s Fireman. Wonder just how many identities this person has.

That is another constant in internet chat/message boards. The person with several identites that picks a victim and bullies them, as if several people were in complete agreement against this person.

Oh you think that, so do I! Oh I do too!!! Me too!!. Me too.!!. Yes they’re so rude aren’t they? Oh yes, they’re very rude!! Oh they should be banned!! Oh Yes, let’s ban them!!
Oh, I know let’s put them on ignore. Oh, I already have. Oh yes, me too…and on and on. How many times have I seen this same exact game… blah blah blah

So much more powerful when you, and I’m talking to the singular you here, are a group, and/or can claim a title.

Same old, same old.

This exact same gambit has been run hundreds of times that I’ve seen.

Well the moderators would know if we were the same person and I bet they know we are not. Now let’s be charitable and stick with the OP, shall we?
Like I said, I’ve seen this before. You, and again the singular **YOU ARE THE MODERATOR

YOU RUN THIS SITE. AND YOU DON’T WANT ANYONE TO INTERFERE WITH THE LITTLE THING YOU HAVE GOING HERE. I SCARE YOU. YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW ME AROUND…WHICH IS EASY, BECAUSE THERE ARE PROBABLY VERY FEW PEOPLE WHO EVER COME HERE, AND HARRASS ME UNTIL I STOP SHOWING UP AND RAINING ON YOUR LITTLE PARADE. **

I believe that you did not understand what I was saying. I never said that certain saints are good because they are visually oriented.

I said that certain saints were very attractive, because they were visually oriented. In other words, people followed them, because of what they saw in them more than because of what they preached or taught. People like Don Bosco, Mother Teresa, Teresa of Avila and Francis of Assisi did not have to preach or teach to deliver the Gospel message. Don Bosco used soccer to teach catechism. The kids loved him. He was the priest who played well. All you had to do was watch these people in action and you were moved by their holiness. The visual presentation of the Gospel in their actions motivated people to go after them to be taught by them.

They are good models for today, because we live in a generation of people that pays much more attention to what it sees than to what it hears. This is a proven fact. Scientists have been observing young people for the past 100 years and have noticed that those born after the computer and TV age began are much more influenced by what they see, than by what they hear. The more that people can see of the Gospel in what you do and how you do it, the more people who will take notice.

That’s why the Missionaries of Charity (male and female) and the Franciscan Friars have so many people looking at them. They hardly ever preach or teach using words. But they are seen on the streets, in the homes of the sick, in the shelters, in the soup kitchens, under the bridges with the homeless, on the sidewalk holding a sign, on the corner playing music, even hitch-hiking to get from Boston to Costa Rica. These are very visible signs of the Gospel. These attract attention. From there, people begin to ask questions and to learn from you.

That’s what I mean by being visual.

I occasionally get bored of CAF. I must agree though that many of the topics are just rehashed, though I don’t seem to notice that some people don’t use the Search feature (I must admit that I’m guilty of just making a new thread and not searching for the answer :o)

I have to say that this thread really brings out the human-ness behind the words. It seems that in other threads it is easy to forget that someone is on another computer somewhere typing everything out. In this thread I could really ‘see’ the emotions. Anyone else know what I mean?

The forums never cease to amaze me though… 😛

I came to CAF because I was looking for answers to questions that were not being answered in my graduate level classes at my diocesean school of theology & ministry.

I was away from the faith for a very long time, and the only catechesis I had was the white-washed, “Jesus loves you”, and that “so long as what we do good, we’re OK.”

When I started my studies, my idealology was pretty much to the left of center, as is the diocese in which I live.
Then something strange happened. I can only say that it was God working in His very mysterious, almost comical ways.🙂

Affter having to read *SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM * for one of my classes, all I could say was WOW! I started to see how, in some cases, “the spirit of VII” was a far cry from what I believe the Chruch envisioned. I started to look for more balance in my education. I found it here.

It is not always good. And at times, I find it very difficult to not comment/debate, especially when I believe that there are misconceptions being thrown about.

But the one thing that I have come to realize is the politics & religion really are the two things that “polite society” just do not talk about!!😉
And that there are always three sides to every story-
your, mine and the truth!! 😛

VERY well said. 👍

Bingo!

And yes, you may speak for me. 😉
Glad we were on the same page!

God bless you for what you do and may St. Florian protect you!
As far as I am concerned firefighters epitomize the virtue of laying down one’s life for their friends, or perfect stangers as the case usually is!
Truly it is a vocation and not just a job!! 🙂

When I come to CAF I like to think of people like Francis de Sales, Elizabeth Ann Seton, Augustine, and Clare of Assisi. You see, these people were great letter writers. They helped many people along their journey through their letters. So . . . when I post, I like to imagine what they would say and how they would say it.

Being here has helped me think about those beautiful letters written by these wonderful people. There was no hint of anger, resentment or even condemnation in their letters. They were clear, sensitive, kind and always seeking to help the other person understand.

I sometimes think that someone like Francis de Sales and John Newman who wrote hundreds of letters would have loved computers and the internet. 😃
