Ever seen people protesting in front of a Catholic parish?

I’ve seen people protesting (complete with placards) at several ordination and chrism masses, including just last week. They were demanding women’s ordination, married clergy, openly homosexual clergy, etc.

About 6 years ago during election season I saw people protesting in front of the parish of a pro-abortion gubernatorial candidate (Michigan). The candidate’s pastor and associate pastor had publicly supported her position in the parish bulletin. The protesters trying to get the cardinal of Detroit to chastise the priests, as well as to speak about the sanctity of life. As I recall, four months of protests heavily covered by the media prompted the cardinal to finally release a written statement about three weeks before the election. (That candidate went on to become a two-term governor.)

We have never had this occur at our diocese. The only protesting (if you can even call it that), is when we have our Pro Life Walk and our Life Chain.

Lepanto, I am afraid (and rather very antsy) about what our people are going to do when the Holy Father arrives on our shores next month. According to Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, the former Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger was greeted with much disrespect and criticism when he last visited New York. Proponents of gay rights heckled him as he began his speech and there were many protesters. It wasn’t pretty; but, he handled himself with serenity.
 
I saw them at the Cathedral for the Chrism Mass. They had signs reading things like “Justice for Married Priests,” “Women Priests Now,” etc…

There was a priest (he had a collar on, anyway, but I didn’t recognize him) obviously supporting them.

I didn’t use the entrance they were protesting at because there was no parking available there-so I missed the van full of Mercy Sisters (who wear veils, kneel when there aren’t kneelers, and don’t take communion in the hand) walking by them.

I would have liked to see it, or when the bishop and priests walked by them around to the front of the cathedral for the procession.

Oh yes, at the Chrism Mass, thrity-some vested priests, thirteen deacons, several priests and deacons attending as civilians, and they used a large number of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. 😦

But that’s going off topic, and we can’t have that.

It happens almost every year at my parish, which is the archdiocese cathedral, when the Archbishop is there. It has happened during Holy Week or during ordination. One time, some lady walked into the cathedral, all the way up to the sanctuary and laid leaflets down on the altar rail. But most of the time, they stay outside. It’s so wrong. People are there to worship God, not to have to deal with political agendas when they leave mass.

I don’t mind going too far off topic… :o …but were the EMHCs needed in proportion to the number of communicants? Did any of the ordained NOT distribute communion?
 
Yes, leptano, I have seen it. I’ve seen it not just in Chicago at Holy Name (not to mention the dreadful incident this Easter!:eek: ), but in Joliet and Rockford as well. On TV, the media generally uses a camera angle so it looks as if TONS of people are surrounding the front steps. The reality is that there are maybe 15 to 20 people, tops, often 5-10, out there.

And these are Catholics protesting?

If not, what business is it to them if we don’t have women clergy or homosexual marriages or whatever…

😃 well, we live in America so they have every right to protest whatever they want. Even if we don’t agree with it. 🙂 I guess they think it’s thier bussiness if they view it as discrimination. Or if they are Catholic, they must be progressives and still want to see the Church change it’s mind on this matter.

I’ve never seen any protesting in front of the Church. I guess I live in a mellow city 🙂 although, I don’t live down town near the catherdral so maybe it’s been down there. 🤷

Certainly they weren’t at the Chrism Mass I attended, but there they were, the obligatory 2 females, offering the Precious Blood with 20+ priests sitting on their duffs in the sanctuary.

But to post on-topic, no, I’ve never experienced the protests in my parish.
 
As with “benedictgal”… I too had a similar experience, years ago… when I participated in a “Life Chain”. As we stood our ground, on a busy intersection in Los Angeles… wearing our Life Chain shirts… people in cars drove by, shouting and honking horns at us. I think I remember someone spitting at us, too. Or someone saying that people were spitting.

But I’ve never seen it at any parish I’ve attended. Pray for them.
 
Our former congresswoman lived right across the street from our parish. She was also a member of the parish as well. Every Sunday, the protestors used to come out and protest in front of the Church and her house because they got a two for one special. It was quite tacky and disrespectful in my opinion. They should have protested in front of her office, not her home or her church. Apparently some people only respect privacy rights when it comes to “choice” and not anything else.
 
I saw in the blogosphere some photos of a certain diocese where outside of the Chrism Mass were a bunch of folks holding placards… The caption read “Those activists!” And when you clicked to enlarge the photos you saw that it was a group of laity all holding placards that read:

Next year I plan to organize something like THAT outside of the local cathedral!

That I could understand, or the protest about supporting the pro-abortion candidate, or protesting if a Bishop covered up an abusing priest or priests. But what on earth are these women/married/gay priests and/or gay marriage activists hoping to accomplish by protesting the local parish or cathedral? Those teachings come from ROME (and, except for the married priest issue, are NOT going to change, EVER, I wish they’d get that already!). The local Ordinary has no control over those issues. Some people don’t have a lick of sense, or they just want “15 minutes of fame”, or, more than likely, both. :mad:

Maybe I should have clarified. I’d say the number of people giving communion was in proportion to the crowd, my problem was that they had vested priests and deacons not distributing communion-they were being served by lay people.
