Do you know if your church burns its own Ash Wednesday ashes, or if it buys them from one of the big ash concerns, like the Texas Palm nursery that also provides palms for Palm Sunday as another line of business?

Our church asks everyone to bring their palms from last Palm Sunday. They are collected in large baskets in the weeks before Ash Wednesday and then burned to be used on Ash Wednesday.

This is the first year in a very long time, we were invited to bring our old palms to church to be burnt, blessed and then used for Ash Wednesday. I am presuming they have been buying them all these previous years.

Our priest tried to roast them in the oven because there is a burn ban in Oklahoma. They caught on fire in whatever he had them in and he had to run outside with a big metal roaster pan full of flaming palms. I guess a lot of common sense isn’t a necessity for the priesthood. 🙂 He really is a great priest though.
