Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod is not the primary Lutheran denomination in the US. The largest is ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), which is much more liberal, and in communion with the Episcopal Church. LCMS is the second largest–much smaller than ELCA.

Neither ELCA, nor LCMS is opposed to all abortions, although many individuals in both denominations may be. Opposition to the mandate is another kettle of fish, in that it sets an unfortunate precedent for government intrusion into religious conscience.

Surprise surprise, the ELCA isn’t opposing this.

😦
I just checked their website to be sure. Not a word.

As you know, the ELCA is very flexible (and increasingly secular) on matters of faith. After being a life-long Lutheran for 50+ years, I bolted 2 years ago following the infamous August 2009 convention.

(BTW: “lutherlic” is Lutheran → Catholic)

Good for you! 🙂

And I’d say flexible is being a little too generous. I honestly think they don’t care at all about anything besides a liberal agenda.

I have no problem with people disagreing with mandate! Do you people just serve your political agenda over facts?Obama got rid of mandate for faith based religons.28 States have state mandates which has nothing to do with Obama. So much for states rights! I would pray that any highschooler straying from the faith would use contraceptives.church needs to go back to praying, and stop being bedfellows with political parties. These same politicians court the Catholic vote then go to their protestant congregations speaking about the Evil cathoilc church.Jesus is the only true freind of the catholic church not political parties that divide us all!

Oh, and btw, maybe you should look at the facts and figure out that the “compromise” didn’t do anything.

God bless.

compromise is what brought our founding fathers together to sign the declaration of independence!compromise is what keeps marriages together! The only way society survives is people with differnt faiths, races, nationalities co exist in spite of differences.

Quite true, and compromise in the case of the HHS mandate might, for example, take the form of granting a more expansive waiver, so that no one would be deprived the the liberty to practice his religion, and no one would be forced to act in violation of his religion. Compromise might also take the form of not including contraception, sterilization, and abortion inducing drugs as part of mandated coverage. Such has never in the past been mandated, and there is really no need for it now. There is certainly no shortage of contraceptive availability in the nation.

Yes 28 states have a mandate, this has been repeated over and over again; but of those 21 of them have broad exemptions (that does not get reported on the news)

What exactly is a “faith based religion”? As opposed to what?

And of those 28 states, all enable a means for Catholic schools or other institutions ot avoid the mandate.

In some states, employee paid riders are available, in others, the Catholic institutions self insure. In still others, they have dropped perscription coverage all together.

None of those means are available under the HHS Mandate.

The only remaining means is for the Catholic institutions to drop health coverage altogether and end up paying the fine. Schools and Hospitals can pass the fine costs off in tuition or higher fees. Soup Kitchens and such will not be able to do that, so they will just end up closing.

Very good letter! I feel that our Bishops are often belittled and so it is good to see that at least a few of them are straight-shooters. Thanks for posting!
