When asked about the old classic “every sperm is sacred” jab from some of my more hereitcal friends, I was kind of at a loss.

The only way I could defend it is saying that we believe every *life *is sacred, and sperm, as components of that sacred life, should be treated with a great deal of respect.

Is that about right? I’m sure it’ll come up again, so any (name removed by moderator)ut would be appreciated.

Your friends misunderstand the Church’s position on birth control.

There is nothing “sacred” about an individual sperm cell. It is not a human being (only half of a potential human being). Sperm cells naturally have a short lifespan; they are constantly dying and being replenished by the male reproductive system. We don’t mourn their loss.

Critics of the Church mischaracterize Her position on birth control with this silly “every sperm is sacred” nonsense. The Church does NOT teach this, and her objections to birth control have NOTHING to do with the “sacred nature” of sperm cells.

You may try to defend it next time by stating that the Church believes the sexual relation of a husband and wife is a sacred act, which God uses to bring grace into their marriage and lives. By mis-using this act (i.e., using it in a way that denies any opportunity for co-creation / procreation), we are defiling something sacred. It has nothing to do with various fluids; it has to do with the joy of marital intimacy. You may ask them in reply, “Do you think God is pleased when you misuse something sacred? Could you understand now why the Church teaches that offending God is something we shouldn’t do?”

Is that better?

God Bless,

not every sperm is sacred, however evey sperm has the potential for creating life. No one knows which sperm will be the one to join with the egg.

The process of creating life is sacred, the life that is created is sacred.
