Two words: SPIRITUAL WARFARE

There is a battle between good and evil taking place. It manifests itself in the material world in many ways. There are those who who hate people with traditional values, like Bush, Benedict, Rick Warren, etc., and there attacks are venemous because of the evil that is working through them.

People wonder why anti-Bush people are so hateful - why the anti-Prop 8 people do things like stomping on old women’s crosses. It is because evil is not good at diguising itself, even though it tries to do so by using words like “tolerance” and “equality”.

If you cannot fathom how the spiritual battle between good and evil manifests itself in the material world, then you will never explain many of the unexpxlainable things you see in the world & in the news every day.
Yes, thanks for expanding upon the idea to discuss the mechanisms and the conflict. You are certainly insightful in this regard. The sentence you quoted of mine was specifically intended to ask people to look into the reason behind this and ask themselves what is going on? The implications were “why anyone in their right mind would,” and “why would one legitimately dislike the Papacy or Benedict XVI?” Implicit in this idea is for those who have ill will toward the Papacy or toward Benedict XVI to ask themselves why, and to determine if it is really inline with following Christ.

The Devil has pulled the wool over the eyes of many, and those who are deceived will reject the Papacy, slander the office, hate it for no valid reason, and therefore hate the occupier of that office. Of course, their deception doesn’t stop there. But, the devil knows that if he can cut them off from the source of infallible teaching of Christ’s word, then the devil can continue to twist their thinking and warp their idea of good and bad.

Let me add to that:

Father Corapi says that in any battle, a general seeks out the “high ground”. In this case, the high ground is colleges and universities, and those people - the future leaders of America - have been indocterinted in anti-Christian thought.

We need that high ground back

I appreciate Fr. Corapi’s good work in teaching God’s word faithfully, and for his clarity.

Yes, much of the electorate has been being conditioned and indoctrinated to accept the evils, and promote this kind of leadership. They’ve already made plenty of inroads to the House, Senate, Supreme Court, and now the White House has one whose views and agenda is the most anti-Christian I have seen. We really need to pray that there will be a conversion of hearts that only the Holy Spirit can make happen. We need to do and encourage Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, praying the rosary, fasting, etc. We also need to remain faithful to the true teachings of God, as taught without error by His Church. We can’t engage in false ecumenism of watering down the truth, in order to gain acceptance. We are united in the Way, the Truth, and the Life; or, we are really not united much at all. God bless you, and all who are faithful to the teachings of the Church built by Christ, which is also being faithful to Christ. We need faithful Christians everywhere… the media, Kindergarten through University leadership, parents, political, and especially in the Church. We need to be fellow branches of the One true Vine. We all need to become one in Christ, as He asked us to be before going back to Heaven. He gave us His One Church, with the one visible shepherd, with one set of doctrine, one set of Sacraments, to be united to the One Christ Who is Head of His Church.

Thanks for a couple of great posts (this one and the one before). And to Catholicc also – I agree with those thoughts.

I strongly disagree with Pope Benedict’s intention of sanctifying Pope Pius XII. He deserves nothing of the sort, where was the church that Pius led in times of the Holocaust?
I was reading the post before yours…Pius XII did A LOT to help the Jews!

Has anyone ever heard of the book “The Assisi Underground”? It’s the account of how the Bishop, priests, religious, and laity of Assisi hid Jews in their city between October 1943 and August 1945. The ‘narrator’ of this book is Father Rufino Nicacci, the Father ‘Guardian’ of San Damiano. He was given the task by the Bishop of Assisi, Placido Niccolini (I’m pretty sure that was his first name), to hide Jews from Nazi persecution-mostly Italians.

When the Germans took over Assisi on October 3, 1944 [while the citizens were commemorating St. Francis’ death!], the city was used as a convalescent center for their wounded. The Commandant was Colonel Robert Mueller, a Catholic officer from Bavaria who was a doctor by profession (not a Nazi party member!). He and Fr. Rufino became friends; the friar took the colonel to the various holy sites, which he appreciated, being a Catholic.

All the while, there were operations behind closed doors to get forged identifications to get the Jewish refugees out of Italy. There were some close calls, which resulted in the refugees being hidden in some of the nuns’ cloisters.

One of the young male Jews got a job with the German army, and he managed to forge the signature of Field Marshal Kesselring (Commandant of Northern Italy) on a document that declared Assisi an ‘open city’–just as the Gestapo was placing mines on the important buildings to be blown up in the face of the advancing British forces! Colonel Mueller received this document and, not knowing it was a forgery, ORDERED ALL GERMAN TROOPS TO LEAVE THE CITY, THUS SAVING ASSISI FROM DESTRUCTION! He got a lot of grief from the Gestapo because of that!

And not one Jew who was protected in Assisi was ever caught! One woman, who was a diabetic, did die, and was buried in the Assisi cemetery under her assumed ‘Catholic’ name. After the war, her Jewish name and the Star of David appeared on her headstone. All the refugees joined Father Rufino and the citizens of Assisi in celebrating the liberation of the city-one elderly refugee, a music professor, played "God Save the King’ on the organ in the Upper Basilica of St. Francis!

After the war, most of the Jews who were hidden in Assisi emigrated to Israel; but one young couple stayed, and they became the only Jewish family living in Assisi! Padre Rufino left Assisi for his hometown of Deruta [nearby, famous for its ceramics] and founded a center for Catholic/Jewish relations. He, Bishop Nicolini (posthumously), and Don Aldo Brunacci of San Rufino Cathedral (still living as far as I know) were named among the “Righteous Gentiles” by the state of Israel, and trees were planted with their names in the “Garden of the Righteous” at Yad Vashem. Padre Rufino went to Israel for the ceremony. He died in November 1977-a month after my first pilgrimage to Assisi! Oh, I forgot-Colonel Mueller came back to Assisi with his family in the 1950’s. The people welcomed him as a hero (with the exception of the Communists who ran the city then), and Padre Rufino showed them around the holy sites. Sadly, after the Muellers returned to their hometown of Eichstatt, Colonel Mueller died of a brain tumor at the age of 60. His tomb in Eichstatt shows an outline map of Assisi.

A movie was made in 1983, filmed on location in Assisi. It starred Ben Cross of ‘Chariots of Fire’ as Padre Rufino, James Mason as Bishop Nicolini, and Maxmilian Schell as Colonel Mueller.

Sorry if this post is long-but this is a story that should be told and made better known!

Didn’t Pope Benedict XVI do all he could to separate himself from Nazism and condemn it. I heard he hated being in the Hitler Youth and went into Seminary partially to get away from the war. I saw a picture of him when he was younger and he looked miserable. Why do people still accuse him of being a Nazi and what sources are they using?

If you mean canonizing Pius XII as a saint, the final stage of the canonization process is an act of Papal Infallibility, and is therefore true. If Pius XII becomes Saint Pope Pius XII, that means he is in heaven. Period.

I’m a new Catholic and I have noticed that many, many people dislike, if not hate, if not despise the Pope!
I have heard people call him the Anti-Christ, people say he’s a Nazi and a homophobe.
Now, I know Benedict XVI is not the most photogenic and can look creepy at times, but is that any reason to judge him?
I have heard many a Protestant accusation that he “only pretends to come in the name of Christ” that he “prays to the dead” and that “He is a false leader who is leading us (Catholics) to hell”. I find many of these arguments unfounded at best. But when the accusations stack up as high as they are, I find my faith a bit shaken.
I see the Pope preaching about peace and love but all some seem to hear out of his mouth is fallacy and hate. Almost every word he says is offensive to somebody. A poll I’ve recently seen says about 50% of Americans think Benedict XVI is the Anti-Christ. I seem to honestly wonder where all this derision comes from. I mean, it’s as if his Holiness (Edited)!

“If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” -John 15:18-20
Think what you will. Each person squares his or her own accounts in judgement. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI is simply one of the most beautiful human beings I have encountered in any manner in my life time. His various books and encyclicals have changed my life in the ways that hear people talk about Pope John Paul II. The former Pope, who I also intend to read, and study as soon as I can died just before my confirmation into the Church on 4/15/05. Pope Benedict is my first Pope really, and I have been very moved by his every word. I pray for him every day, as we are called to do, and feel completely secure with the magesterium in his capable and loving hands. I am saddened for the people you seem to encounter. Nobody has ever said a cross word about him to me. I had one friend who was worried that he’d come in and really let the US Bishops have it, for some reason, but his dealings with all the Bishops has been nothing short of spectacular. He is not a relativist, but frankly, no Pope should be. The Church is the truth, and he must protect the truth with his very life and soul.

Peace,

Steven

Independent Fundamentalist Baptists are the ones who have accused his Holiness of being the Anti-Christ. Most of my friends of various denominations have voiced their dislike for Benedict XVI. Even my boyfriend whose Catholic says, he is “pissed off” at the Pope’s position on homosexuality.
Sorry, I should have been more clear.
It’s not the “Pope’s position” on homosexuality that he’s upset with. If so, that is misguided. The Church position on homosexuality is likely what has him upset. BXVI’s stance on everything is exactly that of the Church, and her Magesterium. The Church represents unchanging morals and values. It is an anchor in the sea of moral relativism. Your boyfriend may disagree with the Church of homosexuality. That would make him guilty of being a cafeteria Catholic, as are so so many these days, it seems. But his beef is not with Pope Benedict. His beef is actually with Roman Catholocism itself. It’s a common misconception about Pope’s.

Peace,

Steven

You are correct. And good question as to why people still accuse.

Steven

SteveFrancis, my boyfriend was a lapsed Catholic who spent some time in a Baptist church. He has a lot of faith issues to work out. I mean he still doesn’t understand why the Eucharist is so important to me.
As for Church doctrines I perfectly agree that Benedict’s stance on homosexuality is nothing new. He claims JP II wasn’t as hard-nosed as Benedict XVI - but even as a new Catholic whose read writings by both pontiffs, I would disagree and say they continue in orthodoxy. 🙂

PS : I actually prefer using the word pontifices instead of pontiffs!

I wonder what makes him attractive to you. Your choice though.

As far a orthodoxy goes, that may be the answer to your question pertaining to why “everyone” hates Benedict.

Also factor in the possibility that the current Pope represents the antithesis of what the world holds dear.

A world that worships shallowness, good looks and moral compromises would naturally hate the current Pope. To them he is unattractive, uncomfortable in his thinking and worst of all willing to call them out on their immoralities.

The Lord sure knows how to pick 'em. He gives us what we need, not what we want.

There are a lot of false, anti-Catholic statements going on. But we don’t worry about that, This should be the key to knowing that you are in the Church that Jesus Christ founded. He said John 15:20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you", and Mat 5:11 “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven”

Only the Catholic Church is so reviled and lied about, this is proof that we have found the Church of Jesus Christ; so be of good cheer, you’re in the right place.

If the world ever stops reviling and persecuting and uttering falsehood against us, that’s when we will start to worry.

Another consideration is this: If Jesus God set up His Church while He was on earth, He could set it up the way He wanted. So why would He establish (and more importantly, allow to continue) a Church that had got His life’s work totally wrong? If the Early Church were messing things up, surely He would have rectified the problem ASAP. Why wait 1600 years to suggest a new path? Why let so many souls be taken to the lake of fire unnecessarily? Should we not ask if it is not more presumptuous to say that Jesus abandoned His Church for 1600 years in direct contradiction of what He Himself stated?

I love this line. I think B16 was elected at a time when most of the Church was still enraptured by the charisma of JP2. John Paul II was the pope a very large number I dare say most Catholics grew up with and grew to love and even more to understand. Now here we have this odd figure, who without much of a stretch could be the long lost twin brother of emperor Palpatine from Star wars, sudenly accend to the Papacy.

I fall in the camp of those who were dissapointed in his election. The memory of JP2 was a hard one to let go. But after a few years of reading his writings and seeing how he is guiding the Church I have to admit, what he lacks in charisma he make up with administrative ability. He has the makings of a forimdable Pope. As the former Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith he is well suited for managing the many turmoils of faith and doctrine that have arrisen in Church today.

Am I still dissapointed? Yes. But that is just me. JPII is a hard act to follow 😃

A year into Benedict XVI’s papacy, the early line was that the people most disappointed were the same ones most jazzed by his election. The late Fr. Richard John Neuhaus had voiced “palpable uneasiness,” pointing to what some saw as a lack of disciplinary muscle and a few ill-advised appointments. Over time, that uneasiness receded as Benedict took several steps more reassuring to the right, such as his lecture in Regensburg challenging Islamic radicalism and his revival of the Latin Mass.
According to this article, Fr. Neuhaus expressed some anxiety about the Pope. The only exposure I’ve had to Fr. Neuhaus was during the televised U.S. Papal Visit where he criticized the music during Mass. I don’t know…a priest shouldn’t be ‘more Catholic than the Pope’.

Personally, I think Pope Benedict XVI might become a saint!! He is a great Pope!! I don’t know why people don’t like him.

Are you serious?? This pope was received with amazing and profound love when he came to the US last year. OMG the man just radiates charm, warmth, charisma, amazing intelligence/wisdom and authority. The Catholic Church has really been blessed with some very very good popes lately. JPII and BXVI are a Godsend. Anyone that hates this pope is on the wrong side of the divide and will find himself in grave trouble if they take that sentiment to the grave.
